Hello All,

I just wanted to drop a post about myself. I look forward to gaining all the knowledge about rifles that you all have. Let's see, about me. . . . I am a Veteran of the US. Coast Guard 97-04, and have had extreme interest in pistols and combat rifles for a long time. I recently gained an interest in hunting and bought a rifle just the other day. I am trying to gauge what a great setup for deer/bear/boar rifle would be. This question, I probably should have asked before I bought the rifle. Anyways, I purchased a Tikka T3 in 30-06 with a Nikon buckmaster 3-9x40 and Talley rings and a limbsaver. Any other info or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Aaron

Looks like you are headed in the right direction...

Depending upon how much you shot in the Costies, you might want to start with some, "Managed Recoil" ammo for your 06. Even with a good recoil pad the 06 can kick. I don't find it bad at all now, but it gave me some bad habits when I first started shooting that took a while to undo.

The rest of your set up sounds great. I think you should be go to go with some practice.

Enjoy, be safe and have fun,

Matt

I have been considering joining the coast guard for some time, but have only a vague idea of what is involved in doing so. Unlike other branches of the service there is no coast guard recruiting presence and most people are probably unaware of what exactly they do, beyond "guard the coast."

How do you go about joining the coast guard? What is the training like? How much underwater swimming is involved in it? (I have extreme difficulty swimming underwater with my eyes open without goggles.) How much firearms training is there?
