I just moved to Georgia, and plan to go deer hunting for the first time (NY too dang cold that time of year). Any pointers on GA hunting law, and where one might go around Athens? Thanks.

Better update your profile...yer one of "us" now. :) I'm new down here too....and I'll be following your thread for info (thanks for starting one).

Here's a very brief overview, but get a copy of the state regs and know the law.

If you were born after January 1, 1961 you have to pass the GA hunter education course. We have antler restrictions in this state- of the two bucks each hunter is allowed, one has to have at least 4 points 1"+ on one side or bigger. This buck can be a 4x3 or whatever as long as it's 4 on one side. You can't carry anything centerfire during bow or muzzleloader season. You can't have a scope on your muzzleloader. You can use any centerfire rifle .22 or bigger. You can use any centerfire pistol/revolver, but don't get stupid and use something so underpowered- nothing less than .357magnum will do. The game warden here told me he figures if you see somebody using a .25auto on deer, they're legal but they're probably in violation some other way.

Profile updated - thanks. Having a home still in NY is obfuscating where I live.

I did get the CD-ROM version of the GA hunter safety course; apparently I only need show up in person for 2 hours instead of 10 once the online test is done.

Now I just need someplace to hunt...

So what're you planning to hunt with? Certainly not a Glock or a Colt ... Some C&R relic? :D

(Gentle jibe from another former NY-er.)

Any wildlife management areas around Athens?

You might want to talk with a game warden in the area. Tell him you're new to hunting. Ask if he knows any experienced hunters that would be willing to show you how to do it right.

The fish and wildlife people are concerned about the drop in the number of hunters. There's a good chance he'll be a good resource.

If I get a chance to do some scouting of the two WMA's near me...we might be able to get together for some deer hunting. You'll need a climbing stand or other portable stand.

If you decide to join a hunting club...check them out thoroughly. There's a huge difference in quality among them.
