Hey everyone.
I've decided I want to take up hunting this year, would love to get a deer and hog if I can. Been reading up on the subject and pretty confused now
At first I thought I wanted a Remington 700, the standard right?
Then I read about the safety issues and figured I'd stay clear.
Then I read that a simple (cheap) marlin 30-30 was all you really need for deer hunting, especially in the woods. Then I read some more and figured in Northern California I might get a more varied range of terrain and a bigger gun is the standard out here.
After a lot more reading I narrowed down to a Savage for the price and great user reviews.
Then I had the thought, do I really need a new hunting rifle? I have my grandpas 03-A3 that I've been bringing back to life (still needs a refinishing on the metal). I thought.....I could just get a nice sling, and a decent scope, and hunt with that right? After all grandpa said "that thing will shoot the eyes right out of a deer" He long ago put a sporter stock on it and I assume used it to hunt.
So two questions:
1) If I buy a new rifle specifically for hunting, is there any reason to go with the more expensive brands over the Savage?
2) Can I/should I use my hand-me-down 03-A3 as a hunting rifle, get it all set up, and be done with it?
p.s. I am all about simplicity. If i really don't need a new rifle for hunting then screw it. I do not plan to ever spend any significant time at the range with the rifle other than sighting in the scope. Not my thing. For a handful of hunting outings a year (or less) what's the best option?
Thanks guys!
Tim
