Winning line of the article:

But Rubino said fewer sales to people who plan to buy ammunition for a criminal act would go forward if stores posted signs saying that all purchases are reviewed by law enforcement officials.

So, basically, politicians in New Jersey are suggesting that by instituting a stricter review of ammo sales and advising customers with the appropriate signage, that this should cut down unscrupulous sales. Because, after all, criminals read signs and follow every instruction.

I'm so glad I moved out of that dump of a state.

hee hee me too...

When I was a kid(late 70's/early 80's) they used to keep a log of ammo sales. My dad would buy me ammo, and they wrote it all in a book... I dont know if that ever ended.

Apparently that was supposed to be scrapped in 1986 IIRC. However, one small gun shop and Dicks Sporting Goods both tried to put my name and address down in a book because I wanted a box of 9mm. Needless to say, I went somewhere else.

So, the criminals just buy ammo on line, or in PA. That's illegal in NJ too (what isn't ?), but LOTS of people do it anyway.

For anyone familiar with NJ's plot to render us all defenseless, this hardly comes as a surprise.

I really hate this place. :barf:

Buying ammo on line is not illegal in NJ but if the state legislature knew you could it would be.

GRIZ22

You bet your boots it's illegal ! It's a recent abomination. The law is less than 2 years old. I found out when I tried to order from www.22ammo.com. Most places outside NJ don't care, and will sell you ammo anyway, but there are a few that won't. I came across one place that wouldn't even ship lead balls for a percussion revolver to NJ.

IMO, it's just one more 'tool' the legislature will use to enact gun control. While I was in NJ, I always felt that the laws and processes were designed to discourage you. I remember calling Old Bridge PD to inquire about the FID and permit to purchase and went through a short inquisition. Never did try to apply for my FID and packed up and got the hell out of Dodge.

BC is right - the laws in New Jersey are not so much to prohibit gun ownership as to make the process so slow, costly and arbitrary that it discourages people from trying in the first place.
And to be fair, I've never had a problem with the NJ State Police (except for the incredibly long time it takes them to process applications); it's usually the locals that don't want to go thru the hoops to give you a FID and/or purchase permits. I've had fellow workers in the armored car company I worked for take a year and a half to get their company-required carry permit RENEWALS to come back.

Where is the 22ammo website getting this information? Like Grizz22, I'm not aware of the ban. I've never seem NJ exempted on the other mail order sites, or are they all missing something?

MikeBurk,

Can you please post some info on this shipping ban? I have yet to experience it, and have ordered most of my ammo online lately. I would also look at it as another way to generate a little bit more taxation in sales tax.

Surprisingly, for a money-grubbing state like this, I think they're willing to miss out on some sales-tax, in order to disarm the population.

I have been trying to find the NJ statutes all morning. I keep getting "This page cannot be displayed". I used to be able to get the statutes up on the screen easily. Even the official NJ website is uncooperative. They now require the bar code from a library card to access Q&A.

I can't swear to it, but I think I remember seeing the statute re: ammo before. There are so many gun laws in this state, it makes your head swim, but I'll keep trying.

I have been getting my ammo from Midway and Graf & Sons. Where do you guys order your ammo?

All Gun stores in NJ are required to keep a log book of all handgun ammunition, and any ammunition that has a hollow point bullet, yes rifle, and shotgun slugs too. :barf: I used to work in a gunshop in central nj, and the state police would routinely review our books.

Possible False Alarm

I contacted Tim Ragland at .22ammo.com, this morning, and got a quick reply-

Mike,
We've been looking this over and have decided to remove the no sales to NJ. The ruling we got was a requirement that the individual buying ammo had to do so in person. This seems to be false. With the law suits comming out of the Northeast towards Southern dealers we chose to CYA until we could verify this. An example is a local dealer is being sued by a New York group for selling firearms that wound up in crime scenes in the Northeast area. Thanks for asking around and tell your buddies we are now selling to NJ. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas.
Tim Ragland

This is good news. But, if NJ requires ammo dealers to keep a log of all handgun ammo sales, wouldn't it make sense that they would ban the importation of ammo from other states?

I hope I'm wrong, but as I said, I thought I saw this in the statutes. I'll keep trying. I'm still getting the "this page cannot be displayed" message.

And, If I screwed up (hopefully), I apologize.
