Seems to an extent new jersey has more to do in correcting their gun laws hand in hand with trying to acheive conceal carry. The pro carry folks their NEED to address this. For example if canada miracuously approved carry it would be almost worth a squat because all the guns and ammo appropiate for carry are effectively illegal. New jersey for carry has a heck of a fight but I wouldn't give up. You NEED to hand in hand fight for not only conceal carry bu for regaining many of your lost rights. You need practical concealble fire arms ands modern hollowpoint ammunition made available again so your right to carry is not infringed.

The story goes that in a constitutional convention in 1947, the second amendment was not in the new constitution. This would seem to answer some questions on why gun rights in New Jersey are not good.

"I find it embarrassing to explain that, for practical purposes, the Second Amendment does not really apply to New Jersey. Delegates to the 1947 New Jersey Constitutional Convention believed that the right of the people to keep and bear arms was so obvious and universally accepted that they did not include it the wording in our state Constitution - a presumptive error of epic proportions."

Also the FID (Firearms ID Card) scheme went in effect in 1966, some two years BEFORE the 1968 Gun Control Act. This requires that NJ residents have to have this card to buy a long gun. A separate pistol permit is required for each pistol. I would assume that around this same time that BB Guns and Blackpowder firearms were lumped together as a firearm so the FID card would be needed to purchase these items.

I cannot confirm that a permit to purchase a pistol requirement was 1966 or perhaps even maybe much earlier.

I placed 1924 as when a carry permit system went into effect.

I have family in NJ, most are strongly pro-gun.

What is the wording of the petition we would be signing?

Perhaps it's my browser, but I can't get the new article about your proposed bill to display fully.
We have a law suit going on right now to get CCW for NJ residents.
Yes, Muller v. Maenza. Are you involved in that lawsuit, or supporting it financially?
NJ has no second amendment in there const.
Doesn't need one. The federal 2A has been incorporated against the states.

That's correct...a NJ Court judge some time back said ....our 2A rights are not garunteed here in NJ...
yes but even if jersey acts like nazi germany its still a memeber of the union and therefore subjected to the us constitution. Even if it needs to get dragged through court kcking and screaming. The biggest isssue is if the people of new jersey are content being sheeple or if you will subjects to their government and don't desire freedom. This is a cultural thing and it is very sad if true.

Hope legislation is challanged and changed in favor. I came across your petition and signed it. I figure if multiple states have CCW enacted within their borders with no ill affect to the populace and some studies show positive effects. Then why can't we have it here to those who want to carry may have the option to and those that do not; will not. Hope everything goes well and good luck.

I found some new information on what bought about the 1966 FID law, I posted it in NJgunforums.com. The law was drafted, voted on and passed with "bipartisan" support because of the shooting of a NJ Trooper by an out of state ex-convict.

There was opposition to the law, and it was challenged a couple of times, even by the ACLU (for reasons that you would not think of)...it was even stayed from taking effect at one point only to have the stay quickly lifted by some Judge who ruled the law to go into effect the next day. There were bills introduced to repeal the law and the most famous challenge was Burton vs. Sills in 1968 and allowed to stand.

Unfortunately then and to this day the Sills Act of 1966 has not only affected the fine law abiding gun owners of New Jersey. But affected those passing through the state, those vacationing there as well as the inspiration for Illinois' FOID and Massachusetts FID permit schemes.

If you want me to repost it here (I am the original poster) ... I can although it would get more views in the Legal section of THR. Your call...

Isnt it wild how it all starts and snowballs into what we have today... Definitely post the info, Im very interested in it

We did have a suit against justifiable need in the permit application process, but it we tured down quick. We are in the appeal process now
