Picked up my new 39A from Wally World Friday night. Wiped all the parts down, and finally got it out to the range today. Major, major disappointment. Loaded the rifle, took aim squeezed the trigger, and the rifle fired, but there was a metal-on metal "gong" sound. Worked the action to chamber another round and puuled the triger and the rifle did NOT fire, but it still made the metal "gong" sound. Made 10 more attempts. The rifle did not fire, but I keep hearing that metal sound. The safety is not on, but it almost sounds as though the hammer is hitting the cross bar safety (I'm guessing here). So, tomorrow I will have to contact Marlin to see about sending it back to them to check out. The counter at Wally's had signs plastered everywhere stating "no returns, refunds, credits, so I don't think there's any sense in wasting my time with them.

Anybody have any experience with the 39A, or with returning FA's to Marlin.?

P.S.
I tried 2 types of ammo. Federal bulk and Remington Thunderbolts. Both had the same problem.

Offthepaper;

You'll want to post this in the mdl 39 thread in this forum. You will get the information you need.

Did you ever dry fire the rifle? If so, you might have broken the firing pin.....Happens alot with rimfires.

I would like to see if there is any indent in the cartridge after pulling that trigger to see if the firing pin was hitting the cartridge....

thanks for the replys.

cane Are you sure you took the push through safety off?
yes, the safety is off.

I just took it from the box and wiped it down. I never dry fired it.

There was a slight mark on the rim, but it seemed very light. You really had to look for it. I keep thinking about the "gong sound". I've never heard a sound like that from a FA when it fires.

Bummer!! Makes me want to get out and shoot the one I picked up about a month or so ago. Have not shot it yet. I better.

Clean it. Marlin packs those things in something stickier than Karo syrup.

Agreed.

Try that first.:)

The "gong" sound is the rebounding hammer. It's normal, if it's what I think you describe.

It ought, however, to be accompanied by a "bang" if the gun is loaded and the safety is off.:)

What I want to know is why doesn't my wally carry the Marly 39a???? I want another one.

Actually, they might.
I didn't know they sold them either until one of their clerks informed me there is a "special order" book of various rifles that can be "special ordered". In my store, the book was kept out of sight behind the counter. I had to ask to see it. I did save a good piece of change going through Wally though.

UPDATE...
I contacted Marlin today. They will send me a shipping label, so that I can ship the rifle back to them for an inspection. That's the good news. The bad news was that this could take from 45-60 days. :cuss:
