I have had a couple of Mavericks in the past and I have always thought that they are a great deal. Recently I decided that I wanted a low cost, reliable shotgun to leave in the corner or under the bed for HD and knock around duty, so I have been on the lookout for a new Maverick in the local gunstores.

I was looking for a 20" model, but coming home from vacation yesterday I picked up this 18" 5 shot model instead. So far I'm very pleased with my decision.

Cost was $230 OTD including the 6 shot sidesaddle that I bought to go with it.

The Mav uses a different fore-end than the M500/590.
The two do not interchange.

Mav is Mossberg's intro-level gun, made in Texas with some imported components. It's 95% of an M500 at 75% of the price.

IMHO, they are great guns, and I prefer the cross-bolt safety on the Maverick to the tang safety on the 500/590.

They both have manual safetys. The 500 is a tang safty and the 88 has a cross bolt. Here is mine.

IMO, the Mossberg would have been a better option. Ten times the warranty, better finish, better aftermarket, and - if you're a lefty like me - you'll love the top tang safety over the crossbolt. buuuut, the 88 is still a nice shotgun. I second putting a heat shield on it.

Picked this up at my favorite gunshop for $140 used (was actually unfired). Added the cuff, side saddle, and light. Still under $200. I consider it my Level 1 Weapon.

what kind of shell saddles do you guys get? I've been interested in getting one, but have had problems finding ones online, surprisingly. Been thinking about running run in place of my stock cuff.

Doug, what are those white slugs in the buttcuff, and what mount/light are those?

A quick Google search turns up plenty. Mine's a four-round TacStar since I don't want to butcher the field forend on my 870 and works well; loading directly into the ejection port is extremely fast. Still need to practice loading into the magazine though...

I think a barrel heatshield would look good on it.

I think a barrel heatshield is going to be of zero practical use. It's twenty bucks wasted that you could be spending on practice ammo, or something that will actually serve a purpose like a better recoil pad or a light.

hey, a heatshield does plenty good. It...uh...shields heat? And it looks nice...

Hey nice find. I got mine at Academy for 136.00 and cut it to 20". Put some Truglo turkey sights on it and camo. Got it filled with 000 Buck. Nothing beats a S/G down the hallway.

Maverick 88 and Mossberg 500/835 forends do interchange, you just have to interchange them as assemblies.
Matter of fact, everything interchanges as complete assemblies except for the safeties and......

The trigger groups.
You can install a Maverick 88 tgrigger group on a Mossberg 500 but you can't install a 500 trigger group on a Maverick 88 unless you want to give up all manual safety features.

Cross bolt on the Maverick and top tang on the Mossberg,,,,no safety on the 500 trigger group,,,,,awwww, you get the picture.

Tac Ninja, the white slugs are the last of my Winchester Ranger Reduced Recoil Tactical Slugs. The red shells are Reduced Recoil Tactical Buck. The light mount is from MidwayUSA and is a Streamlight made product, p/n 981281. Works perfectly on the 88. The light is a Scorpion. The recoil pad is the one for the new version Mossburg synthetic stocks and screwed right on.
