Hello all, first post here and first time gun owner of a new SS GP100 4". I've shot 38s, 9mms, 40s, 410 pistols, 12ga, but never a 357 mag. Looking forward to it. I bought the gun for home defense (can't carry in LA), occasional target shooting and perhaps for defense while fly fishing in eastern BC.

I haven't shot the thing yet, so I don't know how well the stock grips will work for my largish hands (mostly long fingers). I am curious to hear some opinions on the aftermarket hogue rubber grips- specifically the standard model vs the "tamer" model. It seems most (if not all) vendors are backordered on the tamers. I ordered one, but I am curious to know how well the standard model stacks up for comfort and recoil control.

Thanks in advance.

Ty

I've got the tamers on my GP100 and I think there is a significant difference. The gun is heavy enough to not be too bad in the recoil department, but the stock grips with the wood inserts tended to slide around in my also somewhat largish hands. I replaced them with the hogue tamers and the problem went away. The finger grooves help as well, and the longer length of the tamer grip helps too. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the tamers and the regular hogue grips is the super-soft piece along the backstrap of the grips. That really helps during extended shooting sessions with hot .357 loads.

Have you tried ordering direct form hogue? That's how I got mine about a month ago.

I used the Monogrips for a while but eventually went back to the factory grips. My buddy has the same gun- 6"SS, so I gave the Hogues to him. He loves 'em. My hands and his are average size. Haven't tried the tamers, but I've decided I really don't need the finger grooves.

Thanks for the replies. Keep 'em coming.

Also, any recommendations on a speed loader?

I never liked the Ruger factory grip and so I tried the rubber Hogue monogrip first. I found my NBA sized hands were mostly okay with these compared to factory, but I also thought I could do better. What I settled on was Hogue Pau Ferro monogrips with the top finger groove only.

I love these grips. They allow the revolver to roll ever so slightly, but not enough to be a handling problem because a squeeze of the middle finger re-anchors the grip in my grasp. The grippier rubber mono seems to transmit more recoil forces because my hand must go with the flow, unlike with the smooth wood grips which seem to allow the revolver to take some of the recoil force and waste it on a minor upward motion my strong hand doesn't have to fight. I have noticed no major difference in my hand endurance either going to the non cushioned grip, being able to shoot all I want with either grip installed. The wood just suits me better.

So I won't be again mounting rubber on my Ruger, though I prefer the rubbery Pachmayers on my Colt Det. Spec. over the prettier tulipwood monogrip I have for it because of concealment issues.
