"He's hung everything but the moon and stars on it." Yea, I see a lot of that on many AR type rifles. They end up with something that weighs as much as an M1-A, and then complain about shoulders that ache after hiking a few hills. At least at the present time we still have a choice.

Many people do not seem to grasp just how important the handling qualities are in a practical or hunting arm - whether it be a rifle or a pistol. Shooting targets on a range are one thing; fast and furious in the field are another matter.

At least as many as any AR-15, the mini 14 is a very rugged and durable design.
Well then how many rounds on averagedoes the ar-15 fire before it needs to go to a gunsmith/armorer for repairs or new parts?
How does the Mini-14 and AR-15 compair to the AK when it come to long term durability?
I might get a Mini14 (as a california rifle) if I can find good factory 10 round mags for under 40$.
SU-16 or saiga could be alternatives.
P.S Is it true that russian wolf ammo is bad for the Mini-14's firing pin?

I have fired thousands of rounds of Wolf ball through a number of Minis, never having a single malfunction. If that ammunition is bad for the firing pin, it sure has not been evident at this point. The examples I have seen have been very durable.
Only problems are with the Mini-30 in 7.62x39 caliber. Silver Bear and Yugo ammo appear to run fine.

I think ive fired about 1500rnds this year of mixed handload, PMC, Federal, and....other crap. Mostly out of a factory 5 rounder and an off brand 10, and so far i cant think of a single instance where i had an issue with the gun or mag that wasnt my fault (had a whole day of cycling it by hand because I installed a too small gas bushing, and forgot to bring the rest with me). I also have a tapco 30 thats finally functional, but not reliable enough for anything buy range play.

Let's never take these semi-auto rifles for granted.
In the UK they can only be sold as a single shot. Guys on YouTube make fun of an English shooter pulling back the Mini 14's bolt after every shot, but their govt. caused the drastic gun restrictions.
Many other govts. are not much better.

Thanks for the positive review! There seem to be too few positive reviews of Minis, yet everyone I meet who owns a Mini, loves them. I love my Minis, both 580-series with factory flash hiders. I prefer the ergonomics of the Mini, compared to the AR. The placement of the safety suits me, a lefty. I like the sights being lower over the bore. The bolt handle is convenient to my right hand, and the button to lock the bolt back, though small, is also very handy to my right middle finger, as the bolt handle is held back by the edge of my right hand corresponding to my right thumb. Simple, beautiful handling that suits me, for a general utility carbine.
To be clear, I am not hating the AR!
I owned a 100% reliable Colt Govt Carbine in the past, but when I could no longer clearly see factory iron sights, I sold it to a younger colleague. We still have a "household" AR, that was going to be my patrol rifle, after my chief authorized optics, but I seem to have aged-out of being able to handle my employer's rather athletic patrol rifle cert and qual. (I am still slim, and can move fast, but the bad knee keeps me from being able to get up from the prone and kneeling positions fast enough to meet the time limit.)
