Hi,

I am the proud owner of a new Mossberg 500. However this is my first shotgun and I don't know spit about them. Can anyone tell me if i need a choke in the barrel before i take my shotgun out to the ranch for practice? I don't see any threads at the end of the barrel so I assume the answer is no but i don't want to be an ass if you know what I mean!

Thanks for any help you can provide,

FL Joe

Sounds like your shotgun came with a fixed choke barrel. Look near the breach to see if a choke is marked: MOD or F or IMP CYL, etc.

Oldtimers rule of thumb: If your gun is a 12 gauge, a US dime WON'T fit in the muzzle of a full choke gun. A dime WILL fit in for other chokes.

thanks

The barrel reads "Chambered for 2 and 3/4s and 3 inch shells - 12- gage 28 inch modified choke so i guess its a fixed choke and I need not worry.

Can I shoot any type shell through this barrel or am I restricted?

Everything should be fine except sabot slugs (regular rifled slugs and Brenneke slugs are OK).

awsome

thanks for the quick response now to wip up some homemade ballistics gel and head for the farm! :)

Usually I vote for Imp Cylinder as the best fixed choke to have on a gun but in your case I think that's the best choke for it. A 28" w/ Modified choke can be used for more things than just about any other barrel/choke combination.

You can hunt Duck, Geese, Pheasants, Dove, Woodcock, Quail, Rabbit, Squirrel, and Deer all with Modified choke. The only thing that it wouldn't work for would be Turkey since it's just a little too loose.

Modified is also just loose enough to allow for some decent buckshot patterns, so you can keep some 00 buck in it for home defense if you want as well. It's a good all-around barrel length and choke for a beginner. Later on you'll know what barrel lengths and chokes you prefer...and just about any combination can be had for the Mossy 500 series.

Congrats on your new shotty. ;)
