Just got around to refinishing my old Mosin-Nagant after the "Hildas toenails" varnish got to a point where I couldnt take it.

I redid all the wood in a Dark Walnut color, mostly because its cool, but also because steamed 409 didnt penetrate deep enough to get all the stain ans impregnated Cosmo out.

What'd'yall think?

Cleaning out her metally-bits. I had some rust on the magwell, so I had to remove and reblue that.
The I disassembled the entire action (save barrel) and cleaned a lubed everything.

Why yes, my license plate does wear shades. Notice the Light->Dark ascension in the wood.

Very nice...wish I had the patience to take the shellac off of mine.
Its actually pretty easy. Get an iron that you wouldn't mind messing up a little, some 409 or other multipurpose cleaner, some rags, and some free time.

soak the rag and wood in 409. Iron it onto the wood.

The 409 turns to steam and sucks all the old varnish out of the wood.
wash, rinse, repeat

stain wood with your favourite color

poly-coat

reassemble.

Shoot Nazis?

Nice job. It almost looks like a Finn rearsenal job with the walnut stain ...
