Security guard shoots man at hotel

New Orleans Police said a security guard shot a man in the face at a hotel in the Central Business District Tuesday morning.

Police said an argument preceded the shooting at this hotel Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened around 7 a.m. at a hotel in the 100 block of St. Charles Avenue, according to police spokesman Capt. John P. Bryson.

Witnesses said the guard got into an argument with a visitor, 30-year-old Erik R. Beelman, over whose prior military service record was more veracious. The two men began pushing and shoving before throwing punches.

The guard, who Bryson said identified himself as Christopher Marlowe, then pulled out a .40 caliber handgun and shot Beelman once in the face.

Bryson said Marlowe was arrested and booked with aggravated battery. Meanwhile, Beelman was taken to a local hospital where he's listed in critical condition.

How much you wanna bet that the truth is something like one guy washed out of basic training and the other got a bad conduct discharge nine months into his contract?

If I ever meet someone whose claims of military service seem dubious, I'll simply invite the individual to mail me a copy of his DD 214.

Is it just me or does it seem like shooting someone in the face with a .40 would be a more severe charge than "aggravated battery"?



Or do I just need to brush-up on LA's use of legal terms to denote the severity of a offense.

Not necessarily, a US Marshall buddy of mine was shot point blank in the face by a 357 mag. This happened when he was a CHiPer and it put him in a comma for 2 weeks. He survived but had to do extensive plastic surgery on his face. The left side of it did not really move at all, but at least from a distance you couldn't tell anything was wrong.

Sometimes it's just not your time.
