New Pedersoli Whitworth Coming

Another three band. :( It should be a two-band snub nose with optional side mounted Davidson telescope too for the reenactor community.

Most excellent news.

Saw a video over on the YouTube by capnball about it.

Pedersoli makes some really nice gear.

Will this be the only currently produced Whitworth repro?

I love Whitworths and if Pedersoli makes one and it comes with a bullet mold, it'll be a great gun to buy.

Yes.

And Pedersoli makes wonderful guns. The Whitworth design is in good hands.

Mind you guys, that the reproduction depicted was not the same as that sold to the Confederacy. The 2nd Quality sold to the Confederates had a shorter, 2-band, barrel and a snub nose like appearance. If you're into re-enacting, you'd have to saw off the barrel, re-crown it and make a new stock. As for the cut off portion of the barrel, that could be used to make a bullet mold. ;)

Compare this image to the one above.

I noticed that it doesn't say who provided the image to the writer. It could be a stock photo or one by Pedersoli. If it's a stock photo, there's hope that Pedersoli is making a two band, snub nose, 33" bbl version like that sold to the Confederacy.

A two band would also be cheaper for Pedersoli to make. First, there's less metal (shorter barrel), one fewer band, shorter ramrod and less wood per unit. Shorter rifle equals less cardboard for the box. Shipping would be cheaper for Pedersoli.

I think the version Pedersoli will manufacture will be the one that was most prevalent in the 1800's. Pedersoli's market isn't strictly based in the US and I'm sure there are Europeans saying they hope it's the 3 band model with the 39" barrel.

+1

Many Europeans are into muzzle loading guns due to them being more available than centerfire more modern weapons.

Intriguing. Any chance we could get an elaboration on that? I'm having trouble finding anything out there on how that would be done. Any info appreciated!

How to make a mold?

Ideally it would be a two piece mold but in this case, it would be a push through. So, you cut it a little longer than the bolt. Then you have to make a concave plug that fits on one end. The exterior of the plug must be hexangonal to fit the bore and should be a very snug fit. A small hole has to be drilled on the bottom of the mold and afterward tapped for a swivel screw. The cutoff plate goes there with a hole drilled in the center for the pour.

To use it you would insert the plug, flip it upside down and then swing the cutoff plate into the closed position. Pour your lead, swing the cutoff plate out of the way and then remove the plug. With a piece of brass, push the bolt out of the mold and voila! Whitworth bolt.

I'm sure someone else here can come up with a better way. I think there was one in Joseph Morrow's book, The Confederate Whitworth Sharpshooter.

Which model do you want, the "Mortimer Whitworth Standard" (at a pedestrian $1675,) or the "Mortimer Whitworth Deluxe", at a eye-popping $4225?

I am liking Gary's suggestions on barrel stub for a mold.

Now if the wife would just win a big Publisher's Clearing House or have a regular client's young recently frocked Dentist son, run over and not killed by a drunk driver with history in his employer's large corporation's truck, I would be ready for one of these rifles and customization to two band........

I have often considered a faux Whitworth by checkering an inexpensive used Enfield and fitting more Whitworth like sights. Something more like a real British Volunteer Match rifle.
