For carry, are there any advantages to leather against the plastic holsters like fobus, or blackhawk? I can't see any, except for the look and feel of leather, but a ccw holster isn't supposed to be seen or felt, right?

For me it comes down to dollars spent. There are some excellent leather holsters out there.

I like the McDaniel II from www.andrewsleather.com and many of the offerings from www.highnoonholsters.com but after a quality belt and magazine pouch, you have spent $125-$200+

Fir that money I could have some modern plastic, 3 mags and money leftover for ammo.

When I buy some old leather, I want to make sure it's quality hand built craftsmanship.

I've found leather holsters to be more comfortable and available in a larger design variety that should increase your chance of finding what works for you. I actually see no reason, for myself at least, to go with plastic.

Seen... no. Felt...HELL YES! A quality leather IWB will get you through the day much more comfortably than a hunk of plastic!

Well, I have some old and some new all leather holsters as made by
several different manufactuers; including the freebie DeSantis package
that Smith & Wesson is currently giving away, with the purchase of any
of their 1911 semi-auto's. My favorite S&W J-frame holster, happens to
be a soon too be 32 year old Bianchi #6 IWB that I paid $6.00 for back
in 1976. Likewise, my favorite custom holster maker is Kirkpatrick Leather
out of Laredo, Texas; as I use their holsters with my daily attire, carrying
my favorite 1911 .45 ACP~! :scrutiny: ;)

I've heard so much about the hard plastic holsters and holster wear to handguns, I've stayed with leather...Bianchi for most.

Comfort and handgun wear.

For comfort, especially IWB, leather is the hands-down winner. I've got two plastic holsters, one of which is downright painful to wear for more than a few hours. The other is O.K., but not fantastic. Both leathers that I use, one IWB and one OWB, are very comfortable.

A holster wears a handguns' finish no matter what it's made of. Leather wears all over in moderation. Plastic wears in specific points, but takes the finish down to bare metal. I consider it another win for leather.

depends on what you carry and how set you are in keeping your weapon"pretty".a lot of the folks who teach at Gun Site,Thunder Ranch, ect. carry Glocks and other "plastic" pistols, and they carry in plastic holsters.lots of other "professional" people carry "plastic" in "plastic" so the stuff is good.I sometimes carry my S&W 3914 in a Fobus holster, the holster wear is not a concern to me.my CCW guns are defensive weapons,so looks are secondary to function.I have some hand guns that carry well in plastic, and some that carry well in leather.all you can do is try some of each and use whats best for you. jwr
