New primer crimping style?

Many of use here are familiar with the circumferential primer crimp from military brass such as Lake City brass, and I've also seen primers crimped in by three stakings perpendicular to the edge of the primer. Out of habit, I was picking up range brass today (not that there's much to be picked up) and found this Lake City 2012 with 4 unusual semi-circumferential stakings. I guess they've changed the method they use to crimp primers in.

that's new to me, too. Have you tried to de-prime and chamfer the pocket yet? I'm curious how that crimp method affects re-prime.

That style of crimp this been out for a while now. Got 223 ammo last summer dirt cheap, about 15 cents a round. Bought 1000 rounds, took it home to store away but checked it out first. And it was crimped that way. Federal the stuff they have boxed up for military is what I got . Packed it away for zombie day, when I run out of components.

Deprimes with just a hair less force than the common style military crimp.

I use a Sinclair primer pocket uniformer to remove military crimps. It's fast, and it uniforms the primer pocket in one fell swoop (I really just use it to remove the crimp, for the type of shooting I do I don't need uniformed primer pockets). Anyway, had no problem removing the crimp either. Can't say that I like the case head all staked up like that, but it's range brass. No complaints.

Staked, becoming common in the .223/5.56 I collect. Treat as any other primer pocket crimp.

I have seen that more and more lately. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Just keep reloading like usual.

I have been finding alot of brass like that. I swaged it out with no issues.

I have 5.56 LC brass from '07-12 and I have yet to see that style of crimp. Maybe they switched sometime during 2012. At least it's an obvious crimp. Sometimes I've shot American Eagle that's loaded in LC brass w/o a primer crimp and some with a primer crimp in the same range trip. Makes it a pain to sort looking for that darn ring crimp, so I normally just chamfer it all, quicker than sorting it when it's once fired.

The staked LC crimp is getting pretty common. I've got quite a bit of it.
