Okay, the Ruger in this thread:
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=355482

now has the Volquartsen extractor. HOORAY!

AND it extracts.

BUT it rides over the next round in the mag ..unless... 3 rounds are gone. In which case it works fine.

I took EVERYTHING to the range. I fired the gun dry and oiled all to heck.
I mopped the mags and got em all slick and then dry wiped em to get em so they weren't gunky.

It.....seems.... that there "might" be some hesitance to go fully into battery also (but only occasionally) .... just a "sluggish" chambering of that first round. With ALL brands of ammo so I don't think it's a chamber issue.

Federal "American Eagle" is NO GO AT ALL. Single shot with it. IF that. I tossed em in the slough.

Federal "Game Shok, Winchester Super-X bulk, and CCI std velocity....all ...pretty good.

CCI Mini Mag...... 100% function.

Now what I did NOT have (as it chambers too tightly for S&W revos) was some Remington bulk pak HP. They are a HP with a ROUND nose and ...might...work. As I recall, they worked in it when I first got the gun.

Now...on the hesitant chambering of first round.....what think of removing the new extractor and just....breaking... the sharp edge ON THE FRONT ONLY.
No messing with the grabby rear part, but maybe the sharp edge of the extractor is either catching on an upcoming round or even ...possibly... not wanting to slide into the extractor relief cut on the breech face. Just a slight stoning to break the sharp edge.

????

MINI MAGS work perfect.

But I'd also like to have a cheapo brand to just burn on old boxes or dirt clods.

I didn't notice much difference with a dry gun or after dropping some oil on the bolt.

Any smithing ideas or should this thing go to a mental health clinic?

Before I do.

Chill out on breaking things. In my experience the Ruger series .22 pistols don't have enough spring in the action to push the first round into the chamber all the way while using the slide release, whereas if you pull the bolt back all the way and release it (slingshot) it actually gets the full range of motion and chambers it just fine as if the pistol was actually running.

In the other thread I mentioned adjusting the ejector pin, did you do this?

I didn't do anything to the ejector pin, but I make it a practice to NOT use the slide release to release the slide on any semi. I always snap it and let the full force loose.

The first MKII I bought was used, it jammed just like you described - I had to adjust the ejector pin to the right (towards the port) so it was nearly touching the bolt. It never jammed again.

They can be mysterious things. I have ironed out cycling problems on occasion by cutting a couple of coils off the recoil spring. It is just possible that between upward pressure on the bottom of the bolt from a full magazine, and a little too much forward spring pressure on the bolt in recoil, that you may not be getting full bolt travel to the rear. If so it may not pick up the next round...

Recoil spring assemblies are cheap and easily available from Ruger.

FWIW I run AE 38 gr HVHP through the two of these we have here.

I installed the Volquartsen "Exact Edge" extractor and everything got a lot better.
Running the bolt dry in the receiver was what made me consider just taking the sharp edges off the new extractor.

The bolt was going ..... A L M O S T... into battery easily but there was just a ....leeetle.... snagging. The relieving of the sharp edges made it slip in slick.

BINGO!

100% feed and function with everything.

Except those Winchester bulk pak X-pert. Just can't use em. I took my pre-68 Walther PPK .22 and they wouldn't work in it either. The ramp cuts the nose about a quarter of the way up and stops the whole works.

So they'll burn up in my 9422.

:)

You know, Ruger has an unwritten lifetime warranty and some of the best customer service in the industry, even on second and third owner guns. You might want to give them a ring. I have never had to use it myself, but I hear they pay shipping both ways, fix the thing free, and it works afterwards. Only problem is if you have any "custom" parts, they take them off prior to shipping.
