Last Saturday I spent the day at a gun auction and came home with a 1918 Danzig Gewher 98 Mauser. Overall it's in fairly good condition and has much of the bluing left and the barrel serials match the action. The bolt is turned down as opposed to the straight ones that i believe came standard on GEW. 98's, and thus does not match the action. Once I get it cleaned up and double checked by a gunsmith I plan to make it into a sporter. Normally I would never do this do an old relic but someone has all ready chopped the barrel AND stock off at 22 inches but at least had enough decency to reattach the front sight blade. The barrel currently has no crown what so ever. My question is, I plan on rebarreling this old rifle and wonder if you guys have any suggestions on cartridges? My personal favorite is .270 win but I already have 2 of those, and I also have an 8 and 7mm Mauser as well. Out here in Nebraska I would like something with a bit of range to it. Any ideas welcome :)

I love my Browning A Bolt .270 and I've always been interested in a 35 Whelen. Lately I've lookin for info on the 6mm-06, do you have any experience with that cartridge?

i have a danzig same year that was nicely sporterized in the 50's. i have replaced the stock with a modern parker hale and rebarreled it to 458 win.

I had one in the same or similar vintage. I asked a gunsmith about building a sporter, he said he and others had had some various Mausers tested, and said the Danzigs were "a bit soft". He didn't recommend sporterizing to a high intensity round, nor would he do the work. I sold the gun and found something else. Don't know if anyone else can confirm or refute that, just relating my experience with the one I had.
