I have put this rifle through the ringer, and now as I am learning to work on firearms it is my project rifle. I want to glass bed it, add a rear sight and fix the trigger guard as the picture will show you the black coating is chipping away to reveal what looks to me to be stainless steel.
Some challenges right off the bat:
What type of rear iron site can I put on this quickly- I have a front bladed sight but nothing in the back. As you can see it's drilled for scope mounts, so can I screw on a rear ramp or peep? I would like to install peep sights.
This is a remington 700 synthetic (likely sps -special purpose synthetic) in .223 So i would imagine I would have to use epoxy of some type in order to glass bed this rifle (more to learn how to do it vs. what i expect for it to do for the rifle's accuracy) Standard glass bedding material i'm guessing wont stick-- what would you guys recommend I buy in order to do this?
and finally I am not sure what the black coating over the trigger guard is, and I am not sure that the metal thats revealed is stainless steel. I dont know which way is up on this or where to start, I'm thinking of chipping away the black coating (see picture) then determining if the metal is stainless. Can you blue stainless or would I have to leave it sit? Could I just find whatever coating that is over the metal and then strip it off and reapply a fresh coat? It's got to be 1-2 mils thick so it does chip off, its plastic or synthetic of some type I believe, not paint.
Thanks-- I hope to learn a lot from this project and you guys
