I want to create a .44 mag load with a HUGE muzzle flash!
I don't care about accuracy or power, just the biggest possible flash.
I'm thinking a case full of slow rifle powder (748?) and a relatively light bullet (165 gr).
Any ideas or comments?
Has anyone ever done this on purpose or by accident?
I am a reloader with 40+ years experience.

very courteous.... why? lol

Yes, that's a "normal" type of load. I'm looking for "abnormal",and even more impressive.
And yes,it will be exiting a 3"Redhawk.

what to see a fire ball?!?!?! my .460 with a 4” barrel! best range fun ever!

Fireball, concussion, and I bring extra ammo for everyone to pop off

A fellow I knew (now deceased) did just what you are talking about with 748 and a 445 Super Mag for a newspaper color photo taken just before sunset. The muzzle flash in the photo was about the size of a 30 gallon drum, diameter and length. The trick of course is to ignite he powder as it blows out of the barrel, not inside the barrel. He used an 8” DW so you might need a bit faster powder like 2230 or H335 for the shorter barrel.

I hope that his being deceased had nothing to do with the fireball experiment.
That is very useful information,Mr Armorer. Was the recoil heavy,or just spectacular visually?
I will proceed, and give a report on Friday, after my range session.
I'll try it in both the 5" and 3" Redhawks.
Thanks for posting.

For huge useless fireballs, you can't beat Alliant Blue Dot.
800x is up there too. Also the recoil is impressive to say the least.
I load the "accuracy" load with Keith 240s and gave it to my brother to shoot. He mistook accuracy for target and about hit himself in the fore head.:)

Well, I did make some loads up ,24 grains of 748,165 grain lswc, standard primer.
Then I went to the range, loaded up my 44mag Ruger single action ,and took a deep breath, and laid the sights at 6 o'clock on a black bull.
With not a little trepidation,I squeezed the trigger...and was rewarded with
"snap"...
I kept the muzzle downrange, thinking"hangfire",
but nada.
I removed the cylinder and looked in the bore and about a half inch in was the nose of the bullet.
All the powder was unburned , laying in the bore behind the bullet.
I'll try again with a magnum primer.
Oh well,Rome wasn't built in a day.
