For the longest time, I had been a strong opponent of glocks. I thought they were possibly the ugliest creation ever devised by man. Based on this statement, I could never perceive myself as owning one... And then I picked one up. My opinion quickly changed, and I am now a very huge advocate of Glock!

I just brought home a G19 Gen 4. I will be posting range pics and a report after this weekend. I am really wanting to use this as a potential entry gun into IDPA or something along those lines, at least at the local level. Does anyone have some basic shooting drills that I could do to help train for competition?

Thanks in advance.

Congratulations. You've just taken your first step into another world. But beware, the pull of the darkside is strong.

Congratulations. The Glock G19 is an awesome pistol, and is probably one of their best examples of "perfection". IMHO

Shoot, shoot, and shoot some more! Get tons of copper-clad bullets downrange and realize there are hundred of thousands of these pistols in service around the world.

Just about any gun range/ gun store will have info about shooting clubs and competitions local to you.

Looking forward to your range report.

Wife and I have owned G19's for years. I will probably only buy Glocks for autos in the future.

I was much like the OP, totally uninterested in Glocks, Then tried a G19 Gen 2 at the range....I was a proud owner of a G19 Gen 3 within the week. Now I keep thinking about how versatile a G20 would be, what with 40 S&W barrels, and .357 sig barrels...you almost have to buy one.

I just shot uspsa sunday with my G19. Done fairly well with it if I do say so myself.

Great choice regarding the make and the model. The only thing I have against glock is, they are fairly fast breeders. Start with one, then it spawns another, then another, then another, you get the point.

My IDPA setup for my Glock 23 (.40 version of the 19):
-Ravens Concealment Holster (Magpul cut)
-2 Ravens mag pouches regular cut
-Ares Belt

-Dawson .105 wide FO front sight
-Warren Tactical Sevigny comp rear sight .150" notch.

-Lone wolf 3.5 connector
-Glock Worx trigger spring kit
-GW Ti FP safety
-GW striker

If we're being less formal and cheating on some of the rules I'll swap in:
-GW fulcrum trigger
-Lone Wolf SS Guide rod and stock recoil spring

Have fun. Upgrading the sights is key. If your mostly indoors use an even thinner plain black front sight. Or open the rear notch up to .156".

Nice choice. I have the 23, a .40 version of your .9mm. Also have the 17. Love em both and hope you like yours as much as I like mine.

I was led to the Glock 26 via a month of research. I'm glad I followed the research instead of purchasing any old handgun. Once I saw the G26 in person, I was in love. After firing it, it was a wrap. Glocks are all I need.

There not real pretty or personal but they do run well and there isn't much that will slow them down. My 17 take just about everything i can feed it the only malfunctions that i get are from shooter error it likes to be held TIGHT.

I bought a gen4 19, as well. For years I thought glocks were ugly and had the worst triggers on the planet.

Now that 19 is one of my favorite handguns to shoot. OK...it is my favorite gun to shoot at the moment. Just don't make me say it out loud because I'm a 1911 guy.

I just ordered a gen4 26 to go along with it. Darn things are multiplying. I'd like to have a 17 (or a 31 and a 9mm barrel) just to have a full size, as well.

I had a G19 that I thought I didn't care for much, and I traded it for something stupid and have been kicking myself ever since.

I have been through the 1911 craze and still own a few but the Glock is the one I have day to day and the 9mm is my favorite caliber.
The larger bore stuff is great but the 9 is the best combination of controlability and capacity especially with todays ammo.

I have always thought these were too expensive plastic guns, but resistance was futile. I have grown to admire their simple construction, durability and ease of use. If I ever need carry gun I will look into 4th issue Glock with grayish slide that reduces or eliminates need to lubrication.

Thanks for the quick feedback guys. I really appreciate it. What are some of the suggestions for competition modifications that I could/should make? I know the sights is one of the major suggestions universally, what are some recommendations? Why would I necessarily want a thinner front sight? I also see/hear about people altering the trigger. Do you guys recommend changing the stock trigger for practical shooting competitions?

Although I have been shooting for quite a while, and do it fairly well in my opinion, I am naive to the realm of competition shooting.

No different than any other competition. Run what ya brung and change what YOU need to change.

I change the sights to something I am more familiar with, like heinie straight 8's.

I like a wide rear notch on a plain black sight (no dots) and a thin front sight. But that is just me. Lots of guys in competition use these:

But for now, just feed it and see what you need.

This is what I recently installed on my G19:

I find these extremely easy to acquire under most all conditions. My son borrowed my G19 with these mounted for his first IDPA session and absolutely loved them.

I'm going to get a set mounted on my G21 when I get one (soon).

That's all it took? It's a miracle....... Okay, a little facetious and envious...I post something about the miraculous Daewoo pistol and the most I get is a yawn, or "Are they the one's that make TV's or cars?"...:) To the OP, I still think the Glock is a Block....:uhoh:

I was still a hater. Then I started running drills and firing rapidly and accurately. I thought to myself after the first 500 round session that "gee, this ugly little, pig nosed sucker really shoots well...I need lots more magazines!?" I was like a kid with a new toy. Haven't gotten so excited over a new gun in a long time.

It is. It is ugly. But it also works. For some reason, those ergonomics work. BHP's, 1911's and now glock 19's are the definition of "it just fits right" for me.

Coming from a 1911 guy, put 200+ rounds through a glock and really run it hard before you dismiss it. :)

FO sights rock! I love how bright they are in the day. But how dark they are indoors is nice as well since I prefer plain black sights for nightime.

Try a plain black rear on your 21 with a Truglow front. A 10-8 sight with .156" wide rear notch would work awsome with a Truglow front. Hienie make a Ledge sight with a race cut .156" notch as well. I'm guessing that Truglows fronts are .125" wide.

You'll be amazed how the rear sight starts to vanish from your mind but will still work. Only need to concentrate on the front sight, the rear will line itsself up instinctively (eventually with practice).

Dawson .105" thin, Warren Dave Sevigny Comp rear .150" rear notch.

I still haven't had the chance to shoot it, thats reserved for a pretty significant range session or two this weekend. I have had some decent exposure to novak 3 dot sights, its what all of my other pistols have, but I am not a huge proponent of them. I really like the idea of dot-the-i sights, but havent had any range time with them, and i don't completely hate the factory sights. I do like the FO sights, specifically the black rear and FO front... I think it looks pretty good. How difficult is it to change out the sights on my own?

I had the gunshop owner where I bought the Truglos install them (he is a smithy as well). He indicated that it would be somewhat difficult for the average owner to do it themselves.

I'll post the instructions after I scan them in.
