New reloader needing help with load builds for 38/357

If you really want to impress your new shooter friends, try a 110 or 125 XTP over H110 in .357. If data is available for your 2400, that should have a similar effect. Keep these to a minimum number of rounds, I've heard they can be hard on revolvers, but they have a shock and awe value of 10! The recoil is rather manageable from a heavy revolver due to the light bullet weight. Sounds like you're on a good path with a couple of tried and true powders. If you ever desire .357 mid power or .38 +p to match defensive loads, HS-6 or Unique should be a good bet.
And the forcing cone and top strap will be eroded very quickly. I ruined a S&W 65 using those loads. That's why I prefer 158s now.

the highway patrolman 357 magnum is a robust firearm. mine digested a lot of 125 gn xtp rounds loaded to 1600 fps muzzle velocity. the top strap is cut a bit, but otherwise unhurt.

the above load is not legal anymore, and I strongly suggest you stay away from that type of load until you get more reloading experience under your belt. that said, don't be afraid of shooting full-power loads in your n-frame 357 magnum.

No need to struggle knotquiteawake – get a newer Speer Manual. The Speer Manual #14 (first printed in 2007) I have sitting in front of me has a lot of 38 Special, 38 Special +P and 357 Magnum load data using their 125gr TMJ FN bullets.

I agree the Speer #14 seems to be a good manual. Lots of 357. Even separate sections for 357 rifle and 357 pistol which is nice.

I've seen no evidence of any revolver other than lightweight S&W (i.e. K-Frame) having any troubles with HOT 125 loads. I've used THOUSANDS of them with no ill effect in my Ruger Security Six and Colt Python.

Is the damage you fellers mention with light bullet loads gas erosion/cutting on the top strap?

yes. but the top strap cutting is self-limiting. the deeper the cut, the less affect of the powder gas. you will also see erosion of the forcing cone itself. my blackhawk has a lot of erosion, but still shoots quite accurately.
