Just got a new rifle as a gift from a relative- a sporterized 1898 Springfield (Krag-Jorgensen?) .30-40, with a leather sling, Redfield adjustable aperature sights, and a sporter stock. The gun is almost in the 90% range as far as condition. I also got 3 yellow boxes of 180gr. "Western" ammunition, but all it had in it were empty cases. Where can I get an online manual for this thing? Any hints on shooting, dissassembly? What is the approxamite value? Also, the sling is the type with several leather loops (I think it's the same one that high power shooters use on service rifles) and brass fittings to keep the sling together. The brass parts have accumulated some kind of green crud on them- how can I get it off? Thank you.

Yep, have a gunsmith inspect it.

You can remove the green with brasso.

I'd have a gunsmith inspect the headspace and the bolt lug for cracks. If the lug's okay, just be sure not to shoot hot loads.

To remove the bolt, you pull the bolt back, lift up on the extractor, and then the bolt sort of twists out. If your sight goes over the extractor, you may have to remove it or raise it in order to remove the bolt. (I have a Lyman peep sight on mine and I have to raise it in order to lift the extractor).

Congratulations on the Krag. I have always liked those rifles. Seems like every one I have ever handled had a butter smooth action. Just have it checked out by a gunsmith and don't shoot hot loads. The action is not the strongest in the world but sufficient for the .30-40 load it was designed for.
