New Rifle...CZ 513!!!

First of all, I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the quality of this rifle for the price tag. Add the fact that I made an excellent trade for it, and I am having a great day. I traded a four year old standard model Ruger 10/22 for this CZ 513 LNIB. This rifle is definately a shooter. I am really impressed with the accuracy out of this little short barreled rifle. Trigger is very crisp and probably breaks at around 3.5-4 lbs. Fit and finish is great and rifle has a very sleek, and elegant overall appearance. The only complaint I have is the square sling swivels, but they are an easy fix. I can live with a five round mag capacity, but if CZ offers something larger I would get it. Should be a great rifle squirrel hunt, plink and shoot turtles with.

Deer hunter is right. We shoot them out of catfish ponds because they eat the catfish and compete with the catfish for fish food. A few Amish catfish farmers pay us by the hour to get rid of them. Anybody know if the CZ 513 is a variant of the 452? I'm guessing it is since it only came with a manual for the CZ 452.

I own a 513 and four 452s and ...

the 513 shares an identical bolt and receiver. The trigger is much different. Instead of the 452s adjustable design, the 513 uses a leaf spring design. The popular Brookes kits are of no help in relation to a 513. The pull on the 513 is over five pounds, and it is long, and it is inconsistent. Some folks over on Rimfire Central (go there, register, and do a search under "513" in the CZ forum) have had success doctoring them with aluminum can shims. Go figure. I am not a tinkerer. On the other hand, I love a shooting challenge and have learned to work with that trigger for some good groups. In fact, my 513 may just be the most accurate of my five CZ .22s. I'll just never know with that challenging trigger. I campaigned an entire year with it in our local CMP Sporter 3P competition and fired the first 100-10X (50 yard prone - slow fire stage) that any of us had ever heard of in CMP Sporter (somebody else had probably done it at Perry or the like - I fired another 100-10X in slow sitting with my CZ American this past winter). Here it is with the 6X Sightron on board paired with my CZ FS (a truly purty rifle):

The CZ 513 is basically the same as the 452 except it has a ifferent trigger , I believe. If it is 22lr then CZ makes 10 round polymer magazines.

The trigger may be five pounds. I haven't actually measured it. I didn't find it nearly as bad as the standard Ruger 10/22 trigger. I guess shooting military rifles has made me a little less sensitive to heavy triggers. This gun is definately a keeper and I feel like I got the better deal in the trade.

Damn guys, can we forget about the turtles? People shoot groundhogs, prairie dogs, and beavers for the same reasons. They are a pest and cost catfish farmers alot of money in damages. Catfish farmers are basically given free range to shoot any animal that they feel is a threat to their harvest. Many of them pay college students who could use the extra cash (like me for instance) to get rid of the pests. The thread was about the rifle not the turtles. Geesh!!!

I originally had the fine little Weaver 2.5-7X28 Rimfire Classic scope (pictured on the CZ FS in my prior post) mounted on my 513. Kinda miss it on the 513 actually. A handy combo.

The 513 really has a solid feel to it. The wood on mine is very dense and it gives the rifle a nice heft.

I have taught two teenagers to shoot with it. In both cases, they did fine with the 513 trigger as neither had any prior experience with anything else.

I can run a dollar bill between barrel and stock all the way from the forearm tip to the receiver without interference. This made me think that the 513 had two receiver screws for attaching the action to the stock like an American. In actuallity, there is only one. So, it speaks well of CZ's bedding technique to achieve a free floated barrel with a single screw design.

Sheffield, I think this might be one of the best shooting rimfires out there for the money. I am blown away by the accuracy this rifle showed today. Several 50 and 60 meter shots across the pond today and never a single miss. It really seems to prefer the CCI Mini Mags and Remington Golden Bullets. Is it safe to shoot Stingers through the 513? Both the 513 and my granddad's old Savage Model 3D got wrung out pretty well today and both reminded me why .22s are so much fun. Shot all day for less than $10.00.

The Stingers are designed to be fired safely in any modern .22 LR. An action as strong as the 513's will handle them with ease. In my experience, the Stingers are pricey and inaccurate. But, for some purposes they are just the ticket. Now time for my "To Kill A Mockingbird Story".

You know how Gregory Peck's character (Lawyer Finch) has to shoot that rabid dog in the street. Well, I had to kill a rabid cat once. It was thrashing around the back yard, foaming at the mouth and the like when I was home from the bank on a lunch break. I quickly grabbed a peep sighted Remington 572 pump, put two or three Stingers in the tube magazine, worked the slide, carefully cracked the back screen door, waited for the crazed cat to stop moving for a moment, and busted him right in the noggin. He did a triple somersault and kicked a bit and then passed on to a happier state.

Like I said, Stingers are not target ammo but they do what they are designed for quite well.

Actually the problem with Stingers is the longer case. The case can get forced into the rifling of some .22 match chambers. I know my T/C Classic has a page in the manual warning not to use Stingers.

I have heard this oft repeated on RFC but...

I just walked out to the barn and cycled a five round magazine of stingers through my 452 Special, 452 American, and 513 Basic. There was a slight bit of resistance as the bolt handle bottomed out on just a couple of the rounds. But all 15 rounds (well 14 - one was not fired in the name of science) loaded and fired. I even ejected one of the "tight" rounds without firing it to see if any discernable marks were on the bullet. A magnifying glass revealed slight rifling marks at the forward shoulder of the bullet.

The slight resistance has nothing to do with the slightly longer case length. It is the forward edge of the bullet's shoulder seating in the rifling. This is nothing to be alarmed about with a standard chamber. The match chambers of Winchester 52s, Remington 40Xs, and Anschutz 1700s all are designed to engrave the bullet of the chambered standard .22 long rifle round. I do indeed see how the Stingers would be a problem in a true match chamber. I guess TC is saying that the rifling actually reach the longer Stinger case of their match chamber - Wow! But, CZ 452s and 513s do not have match chambers or tighter bores as is often touted.

I must add this disclaimer. The previosly unopened box of Stingers I used was purchased from K-Mart circa 1994. They could be using a thicker outside bullet coating these days which could result in a higher level of resistance.

Damn Sheffield, 1994? I have experienced horrible accuracy from Stingers, but they are great for larger critters when a little extra ooomph is needed. Wish I could go shoot this afternoon, but alas, it will have to wait until tomorrow. I really want a 452 with the Manlicher stock now. Those guns are gorgeous.

I had a 452, it was superb, i used eley subsonic hollow points to shoot rabbits through a moderator, it was so good.

I just logged kill number 464 (those poor little greenbacks don't stand a chance! ) Guess I'm catching up..

How is the 513 holding up? Any mods or adjustments? I've been meaning to get a trigger kit.

To be honest I just got used to the trigger and never looked back.

I added a Nikon BDC scope. A turtle at 125 yards does not stand a chance. Anybody that hasn't tried a BDC scope on a 22 is missing out. Rapid shooting out to 125 is a breeze.
