After all the great help from the reloading section I now hae another question for you great people on thr. I am in the market right now for a new rifle. It will be used mainly for deer and shooting paper but also plan to use it on an elk trip hopefully in the near future. The 2 calibers I am leaning towards are the .308 and the .270WSM. I think both are great cartridges and should fullfill my needs. Looking for a bolt action for reliablity and accuracy. I have been kicking around the idea of a Remington vtr in .308 but just can't quite pull the trigger on that purchase. I would like your input on a preferably(sp?) lightweight rifle in these 2 cal. A detachable magazine wouldn't hurt either but isn't nessicary(sp?). Looking for something in the $400-$700 range. Thanks to all.

I think the .308 holds a slight advantage in your case. Its able to handle bigger, heavier bullets which makes it a bit better for elk. Not that the .270 WSM wouldnt do the job, but.

Ammo availability will be there for a long time with the .308. Not sure if the same can be said about the WSM. Course, if you're reloading, that isnt as much an issue.

The .308 is also a proven cartridge on the target range.

With that budget, I'd be looking carefully at the Savage rifles, the CZ rifles, or the Tikka T3...

After looking at ballistics tables I think that the .270wsm is what I'm looking for. Flatter shooting and more downrange energy than a .308 or a 30.06. My uncle shot his bull moose here in MN with a .270win. I know shot placement is key. I think I'm gonna pick up a Rem. 700SPS in .270wsm. From what I've read they are very nice for the money and shoot better than the vtr.
