I am thinking about getting a .308 rifle as a primarily "fun gun" to be scoped and used for casual/informal plinking. But I would want it to be available as a "serious gun" if ever needed. I am thinking about a Remington 7600 Synthetic (sp?) or a Savage model 10 Scout rifle. Has anyone had any experience with current production models of either? Or opinions? I had a Rem 760 in .308 back in the 70's and really liked it. Any input welcomed.

You didn't define the action you want; semi-auto or bolt?

First, I'm not a big fan of scopes... Unless you are doing 300+ yards, I don't like scopes... If you have failing eyesight, that's a different story...

But I love my Mauser 98 in .308. Sweet shooter, fairly accurate (in Runt's hands anyways, not mine) and cheap cheap cheap...

I like Savage, very accurate, and great for the price.

I also like Tikka, buttery smooth action for a great price..

If you go $$$, then take a look at a Weatherby or Sako, two of my favorites..

If you go $$$$$$$$$, then M1A or a Sig Blazer...

Thanks for the input. I should have stated that I was looking for a bolt, pump or lever as I already have a semi-auto in .308. I want the scope due to old, very old eyes.

I love the Savage Scout (I own one of these, and also the Steyr Scout, which costs more than four of the Savage, but is really in a class of its own). Good, reliable action, very accurate (less than 1.5 MOA with surplus military ball! - never mind match ammunition), and a real pleasure to handle. Two things to watch: make sure you Loc-Tite the scope mount very well, as the screws can shoot loose, and replace the factory trigger with an aftermarket unit (I used the Sharp Shooter Supply trigger, bringing it down to a crisp 2 pounds letoff). The new Scouts, however, may get the Savage adjustable trigger, which would remove the need for a replacement unit. I scoped mine with a Leupold 2.5x Scout Scope in the Leupold Quick-Release Weaver rings.

Buy one - you'll love it!

I personally woldn't bother with the scout as its a bit expensive for a 'fun gun' my sugggestion to you is to buy a second hand remmy, savage or winchester.
