I am in the market for a new hunting rifle and have found out, like AR's, there is a huge selection. I am interested in either a .243 or .270 for Texas deer. I have about a $1,500 budget for rifle and scope. I like Sako's but they are kind of pricey. Any ideas?

Randy.

My hunting setup is a Rem. Model 7 in .270WSM with a Leupold VII scope. Like it a lot.

But where I hunt, most shots are <100 yds. A longer barrelled (sp?) rifle may fit your needs better.

Frankly, all of the well known manufacturers put out good, accurate rifles. I like Remingtons, but pick the one that feels right to you. At that budget, spend your money on good glass ($500-$800) and you'll be in great shape. Good choice in caliber too.

Used Sako's can be had for $750 to $850 if you are patient. Kahles, Ziess, Leupold's can be found for that much or less.

I have spent literally 8 to 14 months on some rifles, just getting things together as the deal came along.

I think you kind of appreciate the rig a little more in setting it up that way.

i've had quiet afew deer rifles over the years and i've stoped buying them because i've found one that fitts me perfect ...my remmington 700 7mm-08

Ruger Hawkeye mkII for $600 (with rings) and Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 for $250 or Nikon Team Primos (Monarch) 3-9x40 for $220. Spend the extra dough on ammo, reloading supplies, or a good pair of binocs.

Update.

Went to a couple of places on Saturday. I ended up with a Remington 700 in .270. The scope ened up being a Leopold VIII. What sold me on this purchase was that the shop owner put every thing together including scope mounting, trigger job, and zeroing the rifle.

I go tomorrow to pick it up. He also has a range at his shop so he wanted me to come a little early so that he could go over operation, scope care and shoot the thing.

All of the gun companies make good rifles. Go to a larger gun store in your area and get you hands on a few rifles. Handle them and see what fits you... not your brother or friend...etc. As far as caliber go with the 270 more options if you want to go for larger game. If you want to shoot bulk ammo you may want to consider a 308. Same ballistic range as the 270 and maybe a little cheaper to shoot. Good Luck.

Doorman,

Good choice! I have the same setup, M700 with Leupold VXIII, except in 7mm-08. Works great!

Your set up will make a great deer rifle, and it sounds like you found a good shop and dealer to work with. Enjoy.

Doorman, Good job! I have a 700 in .270, a 721 in .30-06 (both wear Nikon Buckmasters) and thinking of getting a 700 in .30-06. I love the Remmy's.
