Greetings sports fans,

I am currently in the process of shopping for a new rifle. I plan on using this thing for some serious varmit action. I am not looking to spend a lot of cash on this thing but I do have a few requirements. First off I want something with a synthetic stock. My CZ550 is a work of art and I am afraid that the wood is gonna get a scratch. Second feature I would like is a heavy barrel. My question for you all is what caliber and rifle. I was thinking about getting a savage in .22-250 but I would like the opinion of the group before I buy. Any information will be helpful.

thanks in advance,

Looks Nice

Tikka makes one nice looking rifle. I have read many a good things about them. I will have to research into them. Please keep the good advice coming

for $700 and under, all up, you are really going to be sacrificing optical quality... kinda hard to hit prairie dogs at very long range when your scope can't even resolve them... i advise you buy the rifle, and hold off on glass until you can get good stuff... or you need to shop used - and this is the time of year to do it... many hunting seasons are closing, guys need cash for x-mas... first thing to go is the rifle.

i'd look for one flavor or another of remington 700... the vls is a great bargain, but the stock is laminated, not synthetic... laminated stocks are very tough, and they are quite stable. in fact, most are better than the garbage plastic stocks put on most new rifles today... if you can get over the plastic stock issue, then the vls is what to look for.

buy the best optics you can.

Not Really

Prolly the longest shot I would get around here is 200 yards max. More than likely, average shots would be about 100 yards. I don't need something super highend. Probably gonna put another nikon on the this new one. As far as shopping used, that isn't really an option with me. Just one of my hangups not knowing what exactly the previous owner has done to the thing. I have no complaints with anything plastic. Keep the advice a rolling

thanks

I second the tikka have a sako and love it had a 700 remington didn't
like it for the money a ruger m77 heavy barrel is a nice rifle also friend
has one in .243 .I have shot it very accurate just not a top of the line
trigger to me.

Midway has a close out on Leupold Vari-x optics, that matched with a Savage 112 V in 22-250 should be sweet.

Savage is Looking like a winner

I really like the look of the 12fv. Savage is supposed to make a really good shooting gun and their "Accu-trigger" can't really hurt the cause any. Savage is a lot of gun for the money or so I keep reading on here. I am almost positive that will be the rifle. As for the glass to sit atop it, I am still researching. Thanks for the help.

This is what I found on the net, all estimated FFL fees and shipping are included in the prices. This is over your range but I have to say it would be a very good set up for anyone that wants to go varmint smackin.

rifle Savage 12FV .22/250 Accu-Trigger
http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=13852176
$475
scope Leupold VX-1 Scope 4-12x 40mm Duplex Reticle Matte

$280
mount Savage new short action steel mount matte black 0MOA

$60
rings Leupold 1" PRW Rings Matte High
http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/122288
$35

total $850

The base and rings combo has worked for me in the past on a savage 10FP .308 that is my GP/trunk/hunting workhorse rifle and gets knocked around quite a bit in performing its intended role, but has remained zeroed as far as I can tell.

Just my two bits and is what I would set up for a serious varmint rig, but as with all opinions it comes with the free advice guarantee.

Thanks

thankyou very much for looking up the prices and such duckfoot. This is why I love THR. Great information, even better people. I should be able to get this stuff a tad cheaper. I have a guy who I work with who is a gun dealer and he gets me stuff at cost so that should help out. Usually he gets the stuff $80 dollars cheaper than I could without going through him. I should be getting ready to buy in a week or so, gotta make sure I get Xmas stuff taken care of first. Thanks again for all the help.
