New Rifle Tips?

Greetings all. I just purchased a new rifle and was wondering what all should be done before it is taken to the range and fired. I plan on giving it a good clean job beforehand anyway but seeing how I am rather new to rifles I was wondering just what all I should do before I hit the range up. By the way the new rifle is a CZ550 American in .270. I purchased a Nikon Monarch 3x9 to sit atop it. Any information will be helpful.

The cleaning idea is a good one.

Ensure that it's boresighted before shooting.

Don't get concerned with accuracy until you've shot several different types/weights of ammo. Each rifle is a rule unto itself.

Don't get too concerned about cleaning - a good cleaning every 100 rounds or so is fine. That's what the hipower folks do. (Steve, feel free to correct me) The late Gale McMillen thought so too.

Aside from what Al said, make sure all the screws on the gun are tight. They don't need to be tightened as if torqued down by a 500 lb. gorrila, but they should be in there. Many rifles come from the factory with at least one screw loose. If it's a screw that hold the action to the stock this can affect your groups and point of impact.

Make sure you use properly fitting, hollow ground screwdrivers, so you don't muck up the screws.

If you have the proper fitting screwdriver, remove the buttplate and seal the wood with spar varnish. If the inletting is not sealed, I'd go for that too...

Working on a 1940 Winchester 70 that wasn't sealed and that's a damn shame because the stock absorbed water through the butt and the water discolored the walnut...

Thanks for your tips. I get to pick up the beast after work tomorrow. I am pretty pumped up. I have already scored a bunch of different ammo types and brands to see what it likes. I don't hunt so this is basically going to be a paper punching/watermelon smoker. I don't reload yet either so I guess factory ammo will just have to do. Once again thanks for the advice.
