I inheritated a Japanese 6.5. It has the rear peep sight and the sling is mounted on the left side of stock. The rifleing looks great. It still has the emperor's emblem on the top of the breech, some kind of flower design, The stock is of a dark wood due to alot of dirt and grease with some minor wood defects. It came with 2 boxes of 6.5 carc. 156 gr soft point.
Haven't shot it yet. Don't know if I will keep it.
Don't know anything else about it. Someone said it was worth about $250.00
Any other words of wisdom out there and thank you.

The flower is a Chrysanthemum. & to my knowledge most no longer have it

I have no idea whats it's worth ,but I wouldn't sell it if has the Chrysanthemum for no 250 bucks.

Cool gun. Personally I would keep it if not only for the history it holds, but that's just me. With the crysanthium still in tact, it might bring a pretty penny.

It looks a little rough but since it still has the Mum it is likely a battlefield pick up since the Japanese military had the surviving troups grind the Mum off of the rifles they were being forced to surrender because the Mum signified property of the Emperor and it could not be dishonored by allowing an enemy to possess that which belonged to the Emperor. I have been collecting WWII battle rifles for some time so I would definitely keep it, they aren't making any more. You can still get ammo for it too.

I think the mum has been defaced. Looks like three punch marks in the center. Not all were ground off; I've seen some that had a crude X through the mum. Also, occupation troops probably defaced more symbols of the emperor than did surrendering Japanese.

ok man this is a funny thread.

japanese type 38 rifles are not chambered for 6.5x52 carcano nor is there such a thing as 6.5x51mm. they are chambered in 6.5x50mm arisaka I would seriously hold off on using carcano ammo as both the casings and bullet diameter are larger than the intended cartridge. it may have been rechambered but with 6.5x52 being nearly as hard to get ahold of as 6.5x50 and having a less stellar track record I could not imagine anyone actually taking the time and spending the money to make such a conversion.

I just bought a type 44 in 6.5x50 a couple weeks ago, the only place I found with 6.5x50 instock was cabelas. the mum is clear as day, it is intact and as such this was not surrendered at the end of WWII.

please take it to a gunsmith to verify the chamber before firing that 6.5 carcano-mannlicher ammo out of it

You are correct but, I just figured the OP miss spoke, even if he did`nt that type 38 Arisaka (WILL NOT) close on a 6.5 Carcano

Actually there is a 6.5x51mm. It's called the 260 Rem. :)

It does look like an intact mum, as has already been pointed out. Depending on the bore, it should go for more than $250. How much more, I don't know.

One of the local pawn shops has a bubbafied type 38 with a decent bore that I've thought about getting and reaming out to 6.5x55 Swede.

with some of the stupid stuff I've done out of ignorance, I never assume anyone just miss spoke. and you'd be surprised just how buggered some guys can get their guns by trying to slam the wrong bullet in their guns before they ask for help up here in the northwest :D

I got to looking again at the cartridges and there are 2 boxes of 6.5 JAP and 1 box of 6.5 CARC.
I don't think I will fire it but I am going to sell it as is, as I have no use for it.
