I recently purchased a Ruger Hawkeye All Weather in .25-06 off gunbroker. It was advertised and NIB. There are annular scratches (that is ring-like) scratches in the brass after I eject it. It must be coming from the chamber as it happens even when I load rounds singly without pushing them down into the magazine. It happens even without firing. Just loading the round and ejecting. I'll try to post a picture from my phone. What would cause this? How can I remedy this?

Give the chamber a good scrub then look in with a bright light. There maybe shavings, or such, stuck in the rust preventative. There might also be rough spots in the chamber.

Couple other questions, is this virgin brass and is the bolt hard to close? It almost looks like the chambers tight and just scuffing the brass as you close the bolt.

Ruger has probably the best customer service in the business.

I've had an issue with two rifles over the years. Both times after a quick call to Ruger they issued me an RMA# and had UPS pick up the rifle from my house and had the rifles back to me in a few weeks time.

EDIT: forgot to mention, I purchased one of the rifles a 77/44 used. Told Ruger up front I purchased it used and they still took care of me.

Yes, it is virgin brass. It is Hornady American Whitetail. I haven't fired my hand loads yet. Not sure how to get a good look in the chamber. Also what would you use to scrub the chamber?

Either oversized ( as in out of spec) brass or your chamber needs to be polished. I've had issues lately with Hornandy and over sized brass.

The scratches also appeared when I chambered my hand loads which used new Nosler brass, so it must be the chamber. Is there an easy way to polish the chamber or is it better left to a gunsmith? If I drop it at a gunsmith, is there something else I should have done at the same time (for example, change the timing belt when you change the water pump since you have take the timing belt off anyway)?

i use a 45 cal pistol brush wraped in 0000 steel wool to clean chambers on the 06 fam of cartridges. Really tho since its a new rifle before id go any farther than a basic cleaning id contact Ruger, they will make it right.

I got a .300winmag BDL that would lock up after a few shots, scratched brass too.
Had a burr at edge of chamber.
Wrapped some sanding paper on a rod and rubbed it til gone (checking way too often, slow progress, used some stuff from the metallurgy lab, maybe 00 paper- and oil).
Oh well, I didn't screw it up, could fire 2 boxes and the last ejected as easy as the first- which was easy LOL

Think it good to be less than gung ho on fixing stuff.
Pays to be careful.
Also pays to ignore much of what is recommended on the web.

I'd let Ruger handle it. They'll either fix it or send you a new gun. If you mess with it first it voids the warranty. Ask me how I know!;)
