Hi there everyone! So I went to my LGS with a vaguely-formed notion about buying a Colt Python. There are negative reviews out there (honestly, there are negative reviews of perfection itself out there on the interwebs) but the general consensus is that the 2020+ editions are excellent. Well, I liked the Python. I liked it very much, in fact, and I’m pretty sure I’ll get one in fairly short order. No, today my choice was the Anaconda. I chose the 6-incher as I feel it has the best “shootability,” however I define that. I comparison-shopped it next to a Smith and Wesson 629 and the Smith, while nice, wasn’t as nice. The finish was better and more even on the Anaconda. The legendary Colt “bank vault” lockup was present with the Anaconda; the Smith was “fine,” but not rock-solid like the Colt. The double action pull was far, far better on the Colt; I don’t have a trigger gauge but I’d estimate the pull at 9lbs. The Smith’s DA pull actually seemed longer, though I don’t think it was, and it was a bit halting and definitely heavy. I actually tried the triggers on three 629’s and they were all like that. Not that those can’t be fixed, perhaps easily, but I really liked the way the Colt was ready to go from the factory. SA triggers among the Colt and Smith were comparable, with the edge going to Smith on weight alone. The Colt might be improved with some judicious stoning, if I can figure out how to do that without screwing it up. So, IMO the Smiths I saw were GREAT guns, and had I not shopped the Colt at the same time, I may have come home with one. But, between the examples I saw today, the Colt was the clear winner. I haven’t shot it yet but hope to hit the range early tomorrow morning for a run-through with .44SP and Mag loads.
