New S&W 29

I seen an ad in the new American Rifleman that S&W is bringing the model 29 back, along with some others.
Anybody have an idea what the price tag on one of these will be?

I have seen them around $900 at a local shop. I really like the nickel ones!

I bought a new Model 27 nickel which was around the same cost, and is a fantastic gun.

But they sure don't look quite right!

I guess it is the goofy wood grip.
Not quite the same shape, or as nice a wood as the old ones.

I thought the Model 29 Classic had been around for a while...

The last catalog Model 29 was sold in 1999.

It was sporadically brought back as Lew Horton & Performance Center guns only, in very limited numbers.

Then this new one came out in 2006 for a short run as the "50th. Anniversary" model.

Now it came back again as a catalog gun about a year ago or so.

Its my understanding that the S&W model 29 .44 Magnum will be the
most expensive in the "Classic" collection. We have in stock one of
the "Classic" model 22's (.45 caliber) that is close too the $900 mark
its-self~!

A store around here got some in. I was looking at .22's so I didnt pay much attention but I think they were in the 900 dollar range.

Our local shop has several. The 6.5" cased guns with accessories. Neat idea in principle, but more expensive than the commonly available originals. Us folks in California often don't have ready access to the originals, but for the rest of the country...

I've bought a couple of Classics in the last few months. Both have had problems that are, IMO, unacceptable on such expensive guns. One has been fixed, and the other is going in for some warranty repairs. They both had/have the potential to be very good guns, but I have to admit that despite being a die-hard S&W fan I am disappointed. I'm not sure if I'll be buying any more in the near future, even though there are several that, in principle, I would very much like to have.

Wow, not my experience, .38 Special. My Mod 22 Thunder Ranch and my Mod 27 are absolutely wonderful guns. The 27 especially.

rcmodel: I'm not sure when S&W had "good" wood grips, but anything I've seen from the mid-60s on wasn't great. Especially the snubs I tend to like--the wood grips on my wife's 1969 Mod 36 (bought essentially NIB a few years ago) are cheesy as heck. The "new" Mod 36 grips are fantastic quality! As are the grips on my M27 and M22.

I got me one of those 50th Anniversary models in 2006. Didn't greatly like the look of the new style grips (or stocks, for some) but they are growing on me. I like the way the new grips fit my hand a bit better than the old ones on my other N-frames.

I saw a used 29-10 (the new M29 referred to here?) in nickel the other day at a gun shop in pretty good shape for $650 with the presentation case. Ima thinking about it. Would be a good shooter.

N-frames-itis--There is no known cure.

Sorry not exactly the thread topic but there is a model 27, 4 inch blue in 99%condition here in a local Delray shop for $500. It has rubber grips and no box. The shop said it was shipped from factory 1989. Are these good guns, or better/worse than newer classics?

In a few days, it will be three years since I had a wild hair and went down to the local 'pusher's' - and bought this 6" 629, SKU #163606, new for $569 + s/t. The photo is from this AM... and that is a Bark River 'Gameskeeper' with a natural Micarta handle. The grips are S&W's .500 Magnum grips from S&W Accessories. I love wood - especially Ahrends - but those Hogues are functional - they pad the backstrap, helping with recoil. Function before beauty - same rationale with the knife. This is readily available, albeit quite a bit more now (MSRP $948 in '08 catalog). I welcomed SS S&Ws with open arms... blued doesn't do it for me - I like function first in my revolvers - and knives!

PS The similar 6.5" 29 'Classics' are in the '08 S&W catalog (pg 63) and are #150144 in nickel at MSRP $1232 and #150145 in blue at MSRP $1146.

Bud's Gunshop ran a special in the Group Buy forum recently on a 3" M29 for $550. They also advertise several 629s on their web site for $700 delivered. There are also more expensive variations.

Good to hear. I'm hoping my experiences have been anomalous -- I really want one of those 27s.

I bought this 29-10 in October 2006 and have fired a thousand rounds through it without any problems. You can solve the "goofy grip" question by fitting the revovler with a pair of grips from the 70s or 80s.

That is just one of the reasons I reload. The bigger the case the more money you save.
