A while back, a young lady asked me to take her to the range and teach her how to shoot. The smallest caliber hand gun I owned was a .38 and a 9mm so that's what we shot. It didn't go well. She was recoil sensitive and was disturbed by all the noise. Both of us were frustrated at the end of the hour. As a result, I have been looking for a K22 but up until last week, the search was fruitless. I came accross this M17-5 w/ aimpoint optic sight. It locks up tight and I don't believe it was used all that much. I got it for $500 out the door. I haven't shot it yet (hopefully today). I've never shot a gun w/optics and I'm not sure I'm going to like it all that much. Plus the fact that the added gear might intimidate a new shooter. Does S&W still make iron sights for the M17? I know they have a classic line including the 17. I tried calling them but the factory is closd until mid august.

Does Aimpoint even sell an optic that costs less than $400?

I have a 17-4 and a 17-6 and have seen rear sights for sale on various discussion forums and auction sites for around $25. The factory should have them, too.

Nice gun. Great deal.

I have an UltraDot MatchDot on a k-frame Model 647 .17 HMR that I put together for my father. That dern little red dot will drive you nuts dancing all over the place if you've had too much coffee. :)

The 3000 series was discontinued but I would hazard a guess that it would have cost almost as much as the whole package (sight and pistol) if it were still around. I bought new batteries for it this morning running a little over $20and then took it to the range. You are right with the dot dancing, coffee or not. I put it on a sand bag and did a lot better. Very accurate at 25 yds with a sweet trigger and very smooth action.

You absolutely stole this for $500. What a deal! Have fun with it.

For what it's worth, new shooters generally love red-dots; at least the ones I've taken shooting generally have. They don't have to fight the impulse to focus on the target with them. The extra weight will also help with the already-tiny amount of recoil.

I don't know that I stole it but after seeing the going prices asked on gunbroker, I believe I got a real good deal. I've bought several guns at this shop and got good deals on most of them. I actually want a new shooter to learn how to aim through iron sights as opposed to a dot. If they buy a gun for home defense, they should know how to use it and won't have the dot to rely on.

It looks like you got a fantastic deal. You will have no trouble getting iron sights.

Of course you want a new shooter to learn iron sights. But first you have to make them a shooter!

And, FWIW, there's no rule against having a red-dot on a home defense gun.

You got a fantastic deal because there is no such thing as a cheap Aimpoint. Which you basically got for free. That would make a great rabbit/squirrel rig. Shouldn't have a problem finding a replacement rear sight if you decide to go that route.
