Looks like a dash 2; what's the SN# letter and first three digits? If it's an S prefix, it is pre 1969. The diamond stocks (yours is not them) were deleted in 1969, so I'm guessing 1969 or later. Definitely looks unused, no turn ring at all on the cylinder. Not sure what you gave, prices continually spiraling upwards on these older S&W's. The 4th Edition Standard Catalog of S&W says "as new in box" value, meaning unfired since the factory, box and all tools and paperwork, no marks on the gun, is $900, but the 4th Ed. was printed 4 years ago. I gave $1000 for a 1973 6" M28-2 without the box, papers or tools, and with magna stocks, less than a year ago. Does yours have a smooth or serrated trigger?View attachment 959669 My recently purchased revolver. Hope I didn’t overpay. It appears to be unfired since the factory. I have a more used 4” version that I picked up at a gun show in 1998. This one cost me almost 4 times what I paid for that one.

That's a fine-looking revolver you found.
That would date it to 1979-1980. The Standard catalog mentions that most of the N5xxxxx production was M28 and M58.Yes, it is a 28-2, N517***,
