I was looking into getting a newer S&W scandium pistol to hike around with since it would be much lighter than my old 686.

My question is how much does the reduced weight affect the recoil for something in the .357mag 2-1/4" barrel length range?

I have a 396 .44 special and with 250 grain kieth level loads its about as comfortable to shoot as my .500 and .475. In other words it does have a little recoil!

Recoil is definitely stout - I have a 2" 360 and it will gel your hand if you shoot it too much, very accurate if you do your part, but recoil was punishing (but very manageable for defense).

Having said that, I sent it off to be MagnaPorted and I never imagined how much of a difference it would make. The shooting recoil is now night/day different from the stock version. I don't know if it's because porting works so much better on such a light gun or what, but it is now quite shootable - still I wouldn't want to shoot all afternoon, but it is now something I can handle without being too badly punished.
