NEW Ruger Scout Rifle Polymer Mags

A couple weeks back Ruger sent me their new polymer Scout Rifle magazines for testing.

Available with 3, 5 or 10 round capacity. They are constructed of durable glass-filled nylon.

-----
Magazine weight w/dust cover:

3 rd: 2.3 oz.
5 rd: 2.7 oz.
10 rd: 3.5 oz.

-----

A snap-on dust cover is included which helps keep the magazine internals clean and allows long-term storage of the magazine while loaded.

Disassembly was quick and painless.

Field-tested:

First thing done was to function test each magazine; I cycled each full magazine twice. Then me and a cohort gathered up some spare .308 ammo and headed to the range.

This was not an accuracy test, it was a function test. Through 70 rounds fired all three mags fed without a problem. I have to mention though - the 3 and 5 rounders took some serious muscle to lock-in. They seem to be designed and built well.

Well! That is good news. Perhaps they will make the 3- and 5-round mags a little deeper, for less heave-ho on insertion.

Anyhow this is a good development. SRP TBA?

jon, almost flush, floorplate is about all that hangs out. There's a pic in my full review.

When will they ship? I see that the Ruger website lists them, but as back ordered (for the ten round model). Note also the disclaimer regarding function in other systems. Not bad for $40 though.
For those who prefer steel, Alpha Mag makes some really good ones, and are shorter than the stock version while still holding ten rounds. They are a bit more $, but are very precise and well finished. Function so far has been 100% with a wide range of ammunition grades.

Thanks deadduck357,

I have all 3 on order and will be doing a review of my own. I really like the look of the 3 and 5 rd mags. Fine job on the full review:D

Are the Ruger Scout mags a copy of any previous military rifle mag? Seems it would make sense to have made the rifle to take M14 mags.
Are they a scaled up Mini 14/30 mag, or a different mag, altogether?

I want the left handed version of it. I just hate the way it looks with the recoil pad like it is.
It looks like someone did a half-arsed job of fitting a pad.
They really should have continued the angle of the stock toe through the pad.

Other than that, I want one BADLY.

They tried using M14 magazines when developing the rifle but they would not function properly. I'm not the biggest fan of the mag but it works, its a PITA to load.

Like TWF mentioned, they tried the M14/M1A mags but because of inconsistancies between manufacturers some would work and some not. They wanted a reliable feeding device so they choose the AI type design. The AICS type mags are very reliable and many of the top grade sniper bolt-action rifles utilize that system.

As for the recoil pad, it was designed to be adjustable for the individual user.
