looking at getting a 11-87 by this fall.any other suggestions or thoughts on a good quality semi auto for around the same price?

Look for an older one in good shape. I have a duck hunting buddy who has had a lot of trouble with his, it's three years old and twice in two seasons something broke in the feed mechanism and it wouldn't feed from the magazine. Since it was under waranty the first time the same gunshop repaired it the second time free of charge.

Remingtons quality control has been in question a lot lately. I have an older 1187 Supermag that is my backup goose gun, that has been good so far. I'm just not keen on the Sportsman series because of his experience.

Like Chas08 said, definitely look for an older one, maybe made before 1999. That seems to have been when things at Remington started to go downhill.

FWIW, I have a Stoeger 2000 and CZ 712 and absolutely love them both. I've never had an issue with either of them.

I'd look for a used Beretta if price is a concern. Walmart used to sell a budget version of their 390 for around $500. I see those in used gun racks from time to time. Even the standard 390, 391, or 3901 can be found used for about the same price or less than an 11-87 and either would be a better gun.

If price is less of a concern I personally like the Benelli M-2 slightly better. I've been using the older M-1 version for several years and sold the 11-87 with no regrets. You can often find used M-1's at very reasonable prices.

I currently really like Mossbergs for under $800 shotguns. Above $800, i would look at the new remington, FN or Benelli. The Mossberg 930 is a very nice shotgun. Easy to maintain, reliable, etc. The new Jerry Miculek Mossberg 930 is a very nice all purpose budget shotty.

I shoot 3 gun. I don't like the Rem 11-87 or 1100 loading gate. It can be very touchy.

Just shot two rounds of skeet last night with my new Mossberg 930. While it's just a week old, I've had no issues with it so far. It's a nice shooter.

They are cheaper @ $500 +/- shipped and they can be pretty too:

I just bought a 11-87 20 ga Compact, blk syn. Put a 3 rnd mag tube on it. It just does not like Winchester light loads, just a jam-0-matic, but will spit the Rem shells several feet. Although my Rem was made 2009, the first year of production of the compact w/21" barrel I still had to break it in as it was barley even used by previous owner. I probably have about 100 50 rnds through it and it is handling Federal consistently now. I am very happy with this SG. I plan on using it for matches and HD. I have a Shooters Friend recoil pad on the stock that does not add to the LOP.
