Just picked up my first semi-auto, a Springfield XD 45 ACP, xd9611HCSP06.

Do I need to field strip it and clean it before I shoot it for the first time?

Do I clean with some Hoppe's? Anything special I should know?

I would and you should, but with a Springfield you might not have to. I would at least field strip it and see how much gunk they packed it in. Nice purchase - congrats.

it's all in the owners manual
a light lube and quick trip to the range,
don't really know what specifically you are asking
most modern gun don't require the complete cleaning that a used/military surplus gun does.

I always field strip and clean a new gun. Either they come full of packing grease or oil, or they are bone dry. It is also a good way to familiarize yourself with its operation and inner workings. I would lube this one as I do my Glocks: a single drop of oil on each frame rail, along the center "cocking rail" of the slide, the barrel cam and locking lugs (in this case the squared-off shoulder on the chamber) and any trigger linkage parts that rub or slide against each other. Only a light film is necessary, not squeezing or spraying out of everywhere. I like BreakFree CLP (the liquid in the squeeze bottle, not the spray), but there are other good gun oils as well. Bore cleaners like good old Hoppes #9 should be used in the bore and chamber.

I did a lot of class work and training. We took mine and removed it from the box, and within 1 month and a dozen of us, had 10,000 rounds of factory loaded ammo through it. The only fail to feed or FTF were in the first 100 rounds. I would take that gun anywhere with me. I have unreal confidence that that pistol will fire. Mine is a .40, but I am just saying. Guys all brag about 10,000 rounds, blah blah blah... I have a documented 10,000 rounds, I never cleaned it until round 1000 had been fired. Mine was not too oily.

congrats on the xd, i have owned several and i still have one with over 19,000rds actually it is the first handgun that i ever got. they are great, reliable, and accurate guns. no matter what gun it is I always take it apart, inspect it, wipe it down and lube it up before i head to the range.

Yes, clean it and avoid getting any lube into the firing mechanism. The slide should just be cleaned with a cue tip nd some alcohoal, don't over lube the gun. A drop where the barrell hits and a drop rubbed into the rails, that's it. Get all that orange protective film off with triflow or Blast.

I always clean and lube a new new gun. On occasion I have found a lot of "stuff" in new pistols.

Took it apart and cleaned it last night. Very simple procedure. Didn't seem to have much packing grease.
