New Senate Bill Makes Straw Purchasing Illegal

So all those idiots have done is posture and lie and waste our money to propose banning actions that are already banned. Is there no limit to the stupidity of our politicians? You know the answer to that.

Actually, I think it's pretty bright. The NRA is going to back it..it has to or it will look unreasonable. The public gets what it wants...something done about gun sales....and that it's absolutely meaningless in practical terms won't even be noticed by Mrs. and Mrs. Hoplophobe. We know it's already illegal and so we won't punish politicians for voting for it. It's a perfect step to deflect some of the heat off the entire issue.

But, in answer to the "stupidity" question....No.

I agree that it may have a political benefit, but I disagree that it is "meaningless in practical terms."

There are, of course, other reasons why it would be undesirable for that law to be enacted.

Specifically, it enlarges the definition of prohibited persons by incorporating State and local laws, and it lowers the bar with regard to mens rea. Anyone else surprised that there is no exemption for the BATFE? :|

The proposed bill does not change the mens rea for straw purchasing. It is still knowingly. It does appear to create new categories of prohibited people though.
