New Shooting Discipline

There is a local indoor range opening soon and they will have monthly pistol matches. I have been asked to run them, pending final agreements.

Here's what I'm thinking about doing:

IPSC rules with IDPA-type scoring. I'd like to change the 1/2 second added per point down to .20 seconds added. This would still reward accuracy while not requiring one to "slow down" to get a better score once the points down are added up. It's much easier to understand and implement this type of scoring. No software required. All penalties (no-shoots, misses, procedurals) are 10 seconds each.

No "competition only" guns allowed. Open class guns can shoot elsewhere. Likewise, if you have a mongo magwell on your LHDC STI, leave it at home and bring out the nightstand or carry gun.

Practical carry gear encouraged, but not required (yet) Two mags on the belt will allow you to complete each stage.

The divisions are "Low Cap" where the max number of rounds in the mag is NINE.

The "High Cap" division is with 10 rds in the mag and up. This means you can load up your G-17 to capacity!

"Revolver" division is self explanatory. Moonclips and speedloaders compete together. Shoot up to an 8 3/8th's" barrel.

And "LCD" division for the Lasers, Dots (like the slide mounted Optima) and Compensated pistols (like the Glock "C" models and the "V" models from Springfield)

All calibers compete together in their respective divisions.

This will give everyone a chance to shoot a gun not normally used for matches, which is the main idea behind the matches.

Comments or thoughts would be appreciated!

For what reason ?

I don't see anything on their site that appears to cover this type of match.

We use the 'time only' scoring at our local AASA Steel matches and it is an easy way to score. The penalty times need to be thought out carefully, so accuracy will be rewarded rather than encourage a miss and keep moving fast.

As far as the mag capacity goes, another simple way to allow any size mag is to build in mandatory mag changes in the stages. If your mag holds 24, it's actually a disadvantage if there's a mandatory mag change after 8 or 10 rds.

Your plan sounds workable and interesting if it's a basis for self defense training/practice.

You may want to consider ICORE scoring, which I understand is all time based as well.

An advantage to using an established organizations format (IDPA, USPSA, IPSC, etc.) is that the rules are all figured out, and the competitors know what they are getting, which will attract and retain competitors. The downside, as you mention, is complicated scoring.
