Well, the deal fell through on my friend's 226 that had less than 100 rounds fired through it. He was able to sell it for $745, while I was not able to make an offer that came even close. So, yesterday, I did like many of you and ordered a CPO Sig P226 in 9mm from James at Ordnance Outfitters. It feels like Christmas already...just waiting to find that present "under the tree" (in the mail) :)

I will need to purchase several things to get me up to speed however. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a CPO with night sights. I am looking to set up my 226 similar to my duty weapons. I have used mostly older 228s (so I assume they were mostly 3-dot green Trijicons that were going dim). This gun will primarily be used for range training, may possibly see some duty-carry, and may also be used for stock class IPSC/IDPA (where I hope to eventually compete to train, rather than train to compete). My thoughts are to use 3-dot green, so I am looking at the same sights whether at work or not. Trijicons are expensive, and was wondering whether the many others out there could fit the bill (Meprolight, SigLite, Tru-Glo, XS, etc.). I am also intrigued in the contrast sights, and whether they would improve my lining up the sights (and not make a difference swithing back to 3-dot green). What sights do you guys like, and where can I get a good price on the internet for them?

I also need some extra magazines. The gun is being shipped with only 2 magazines. I always have 3 on me while on duty, and will require a few extras for the range. I noticed Sig factory mags are a bit more than aftermarket mags. I have heard that the factory mags are the most reliable, and that the aftermarket mags can't be trusted. Are aftermarket mags really that unreliable? What would you suggest if you in fact agree that aftermarket mags are reliable...Mec-Gar, Eagle, Pro-Mag etc.? What is a good source to purchase extra high-cap mags?

Any LEOs out there? I need a holster for duty-carry. My agency is in the Stone Age and still issues a lot of single-retention holsters. We tend to get a lot of Uncle Mike's web gear and often use Safariland and Bianchi for leathers. I would like to get a double or triple-retention holster for range work, probably nylon. Any suggestions? Also, may need a concealable holster for IDPA. What are you guys using? Once again, where are you guys finding good prices and service?

Lastly, I need a lot of cheap 9mm range ammo. Where are you guys finding the deals on the net right now?

I am sure many of my questions have been covered in the past, but I am hoping you guys can help me limit my research, as I will be making purchases ASAP. Plus, I am always entertained by the suggestions. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just ordered a couple of 17 round Mec-Gars from Island Tactical. They haven't arrived, so I can't comment on their reliability. It's the first time I've ordered from this place so I can't vouch for them either.

Do you have an Academy Sports store nearby? Their regular price for Blazer is $3.86 a box. I can't beat that price reloading my own jacketed ammo so that's what I use for range fodder. (Don't have to hunt down all the "brass" either.)

I'd shoot the stock "contrast" sights for at least a while. If you didn't like the vonStavenhagen pattern (white dot front over white square rear) a little black marker followed by some white-out or model paint would give you a three-dot sight picture at low cost. You could even paint green spots on them to mimic the appearance of night sights at night.
I know of no other tritium night sight that is SUBSTANTIALLY less expensive than Trijicon.
Me? I paint most front sights red and rear sights black. My P220 front is red around the tritium lamp.
Fibre optic front sights are very nice for competition but I don't consider them sturdy enough for carry or duty.

I don't know about a security uniform holster.

I have factory Sig-Sauer magazines for serious use and supplement with a Mec-Gar for targets and practice. Although the Mec-Gar has been fully reliable so far. Pro-Mags are spotty in quality. I have some for P220 that are ok but a friend has trouble with them.

I use RTP Kydex holsters for IDPA and concealment:

I shoot IDPA with Chris, the maker, and he is a stand-up guy. He supplies all manner of competitive shooters and several LE agencies.

MecGar is the OEM for SIG mags (other than the older spot-welded ones which were of German mfg, I think); reliability will not be an issue. The reason they have a greater cpacity than SIG-marked mags is the different follower used in the MecGar branded ones. I would studiously avoid the other brands.

I generally prefer Trijicons for the few extra $$, b/c I prefer the greater rear notch width:front post width ratio they typically have, but the other brands are well-made.

Academy has a smokin' price on that ammo, but I don't think there are any Academy Sports retailers in my area....and no shipping from their website. Not trying to go the cheap route, just trying to save a few bucks since I am fully outfitting myself for the new gun, on and off-duty. I will definitely be picking up night sights...found a deal on Sig Lites at CDNN for about $50, and heard these were actually made by Trijicon. Sounds like Mec-Gar is the way to go for aftermarket, and a couple extra rounds with the 17-round mag never hurts.

look at CDNN for sig mags

I have had good luck finding reasonably priced sig mags @CDNN.
don't be afraid to buy used orginal sig mags. thet are a good value, and always seem to work

-- Concur with the votes for Mec-Gar mags. 17-rounders are excellent. Best I've used.
-- Factory SIG mags are also great. I've never had any problems with used SIG mags, either.
-- Run, run away fast from Pro-Mags -- utter crap. I've never used Eagle mags, but then, never ever had anyone tell me they use 'em either ...
-- On the range, I use a Blade-Tech Kydex paddle holster for my 226s. No real need for additional retention devices, much more secure than nylon.
-- For daily carry in civilian clothes, either a Kramer Belt Scabbard (black) in horsehide, or a Kramer IWB #3. Kramer holsters, esp. in horsehide, wear better and last longer than any holsters I've ever used. You can get most of 'em for under a hundred bucks. See www.kramerleather.com
-- Safariland is better for duty leather than Bianchi.
-- I am now a huge fan of the X-S sights (v-notch rear with white post, big dot front). My other SIGs sport Trijicons, nothing better as far as night-sights.

Thanks for the holster info. I normally just make do with what I have around, or what I get issued. I like hearing what other folks are using. This is something I feel I probably should have been putting more thought into...not just what I am carrying, but how I am carrying it. Still sounds like Mec-Gars are the way to go...I notice they have been sold out on many websites (probably that great price which makes good Xmas gifts:) ), but I see they are pretty common on the net. Good to hear that the used mags (factory) are a good deal and hold up over time...may try a few of those as well from CDNN.

I believe that the Trijicon sights have changed recently to have a wider band around the lamps to facilitate daytime use. You have to decide if that's important to you.

For ammo, Walmart is still one of the best deals going. Winchester White Box 100rd value packs for $11.34 locally.

Mags: arizonagunrunners.com.

Porterdog,

The wider band might be nice. I did not really like the older ones, they did not "pop out" as much in daylight, but they did the job.

Also, I will not be needing that 228 trigger, as I am purchasing a different 226 that has the standard trigger. I appreciated the offer however...thanks.

I can vouch for Island Tactical now. Ordered the magazines 12/12 and they showed up today 12/21. They look great, fit flush, hold 17 rounds and feed dummy rounds just fine. I'll try them out next time I go to the range.

My beloved P226

Ammo: I reload 9mm, so I can't help with loaded ammo, but I get Winchester 115grn FMJ for $47/1000 bullets on eBay. If you're a reloader it always helps to look on eBay. :)

Holster: I have a Fobus SG21RP that I'm fairly happy with. I also use their light carrier for my M6. The P226 is big for CCW, but that's why I have P239 in 357 Sig ordered. :p

Mags: For my money, there are only two magazines mfgs that will go in my Sig: Sig or Mec-Gar. The feed mechanism of my pistol isn't someplace I want to cut corners. :) As an aside, I purchased SIX lightly used 10rnd Mec-Gar mags for my P226 off eBay for $41. It can NEVER hurt to look. :)

I would definitely stay away from Pro-Mag. I can't recall the last time I heard something good about them. Mec-Gar or Factory magazines will work well for you. If you have difficulty finding them at a decent price, I carry them used and new.
