Yes on the guns. That $199 price is really surprising. But I'll be stopping at Surplus Ammo & Arms in Lakewood to save money on ammo over Cabelas...

but I've found most of their prices fairly high

I dunno if I'd go as far as "most". They're usually better than Bass Pro, pretty much always better than Gander Mtn.

Cabela's seems to be more in line with Sportsmans Warehouse in my experience; A bit more than online, but pretty decent for brick & mortar retail.

Besides, you can easily kill a day in there just window shopping if you hunt and fish :)

Well, there you go. I guess it matters where you live. I don't have Bass Pro (went to the Myrtle Beach store once) or Gander Mtn. anywhere near me. I am spending more time and money at Sportman's Warehouse since they came back to the area.

Wow. Just got off the phone with the Lacey Cabelas gun counter. At first was told they were $269, but they'd check. They checked and they are actually marked $249, but on sale for $199. That's considerably better than I could get one from a distributor with my C&R license. I think I'm leaving work early today.

Never mind. I took the afternoon off from work and drove down. They are out. They said guys were showing up with friends and buying four or five each. Apparently there were only four or five left this morning. Wish they had told me I could put one on layaway over the phone...

I stopped by the new Cabelas in Springfield today and picked one up. It is unissued, excellent condition, bore is shiny new. I think the Yugo rifle is better quality than the Chinese ones I was used to back in the day.

The gun counter there was absolutely packed, took over an hour, lots of guns going out the door. Their prices on used guns seems awful high to me, so I was really surprised to see an SKS in this condition for this price there.

Ahhh... The good old days. I remember my 1st SKS. Paid $69. Also bagged a case of 1200 rounds of 7.62x39 for $59. Must have been around 1986 or so.

Median household income has also gone from $27k to $49k between 1985-2010. Combine that increase in buying power with an increase in popularity in Com-bloc "assault rifles" since the Clinton gun ban plus more import restrictions and the prices make more sense.

I'm not sure there has been much increase in buying power for people of median income when you factor in inflation. There is no doubt that wealthiest 1% has increased their buying power alot since 1985, they are all buying H&K weaponry.

I bought my S&W 15 Sport last Aug. It's a great gun for the money. Fit and finish is as good as any of the other mid priced ARs I have seen; and a lot better then some on the market. They are very accurate and I think the 5R rifling helps with that. Mine does equally well with 55 and 62 gr ammo, both 556 and 223. They are lite weight, which makes them easy and fast to handle. S&W makes great weapons and their AR line is no exception to the rule. Plus they have a lifetime warranty, so what's not to like!! Since I'm never going to take it to war, the missing forward assist and dust cover are non issues for me. YMMV

Here's mine after some mods.
