This is a failry old thread..but it is interesting..would you recommend the airweight for personal protection to a new female shooter?? seems to much for such to handle..thoughts

Sure would. Here is one meant for the ladies; it's even called "Lady Smith" :)

If recoil is a problem she could use target wadcutters. Some still regard them as some of the best SD choices for airweights. IMHO shooting snubbies is a matter of practice and technique rather than raw strength.

I'm glad to see this thread again, as I have more to the story.

I have been carrying the 442 (w/158gr Buffalo Bores) on my (plainclothes/polo shirt) job for a couple monthes now, and what a pleasure to carry in a strongside OWB paddle SERPA retention holster.

I can carry it exposed -or- concealed by just moving my polo shirt over it, or behind it. Under the shirt (even with the OWB Serpa) it's no larger than a typical cell phone bulge, and attracts NO attention. Very comfortable and concealible...even with Arizona's light "warm weather" clothes.

And the rest of the story: I enjoyed my first class of Defensive Pistol I, yesterday, and it proved itself that it was a great choice.

It did a very accurate job of putting all shots into the center of mass with followup headshots. (even under pressure/time drills).

So, despite the reputation of the snubby's lack of accuracy...it was great at typical Defensive Pistol ranges. (<21' to contact distances).

It lacked a little on the steel plate knockdown test...but that's another (knockdown power) debate, and of course I was using small target training ammo, NOT my 158gr Buffalo Bores on the steel plate shootoff.

I really feel that the S&W442 is a great little carry gun with plenty of accuracy and should be fine for "knockdown/shock" with the larger 158grainers.

I believe this would also be applicable to the Lady Smith and the other J-frame smittys!!!

I use the Remington LHP. It is inexpensive and easy to purchase in quantity. Remington has the softest lead, and so it expands the best in a short barrell compared to any of the other manufacturers producing this load.
Additionally every agency on the face of the planet carried that load in the revolver era and used it to good effect. RCMP, FBI, DEA, Chicago, Miami and St. Louis all carried and used the round to great effect.
It is generally said this load is as effective as .45 FMJ. It basically gives your pocket gun big bore power.
Maybe the newer rounds are better, but the LHP is proven, reliable, affordable and well-tested. I carry it everyday, everywhere I legally can all the time. Carry all the time.

The Remington product code is 38S12.

See if the Sportsman's Guide has it--I've had success in ordering from them in the past.

Thanks JFH!
I'm having a heck of a time finding ANY ammo right now. Glad I got the Buffalo Bores when I did.

I need .38FMJ for upcomming classes and it's a bear to find ANY!
(here in Phoenix)!
