Just bought my first 5.56 rifle, and I'm wondering if there is much difference is the ammo used. Additionally, any recommendations on where to purchase?

Thanks, and love the forum.

Just go with whatever brass cased 223 or 5.56 ammo is cheapest and you will be fine for plinking ammo. M193 and M855 will probably be the cheapest right there with PMC. You shouldn't need to pay more than 310 per 1k.

If you have a 5.56 chamber either 5.56 or .223 is safe to use. If you have a .223 chamber stay with .223 only. The barrel twist well determine what weight bullet your rifle well shoot best.

Check out Palmetto State Armory. They usually have very competitive prices, and they only charge a flat rate of $12 hazardous fee per 1K rounds.

I've had good luck with the 62grn Privi Partisan M855.

I try to make sure I get ammo that is Non-Corrosive.

Other than that, I roll my own.

Thanks for all the responses. Regarding the pics, I'm lucky I can get through this as is. Maybe I can get one of my geek sons to help with that.

Yeah, just search around for the best prices. Even though I do reload, I still burn through a lot of Silver Bear ammo. It's dirt cheap at closer to $200 per thousand. It just depends on whether you rifle likes eating steel cases ammo.

madcrate, I've seen that depiction of what is appropriate in barrels of different twist rates and I've gotta tell ya, it's wrong. First of all, the weight of the bullet has nothing to do with the twist required to stabilize it. The length of the bullet is the determining factor. Secondly, I've shot plenty of 40gr bullets out of my 1:7 twist barrels without any problems. The only problems that I've SEEN is with people shooting the sub 40gr bullets that have the really thin jackets.

Overall the graphic madcratebuilder posted is right on the money, an excellent guide for the average rifle. No doubt individual barrels differ but the picture is very helpful to people trying to figure this stuff out.

I agree on using the cheap steel case. If your rifle likes it what's not to like about 20 cents per shot!

And this is how misinformation gets spread. If you really want to talk in general terms, a 1:12 twist is more appropriate to the bullets that fall under the 1:9 category. I'll leave it alone since this guy is just asking about where to get ammo.

I have a few vendors that I usually check out. Cheaperthandirt.com, aimsurplus.com, ammoman.com, and a few other places that I have book marked on my home 'puter.
