Ok, so I've got the rifle picked out, the site picked out (CDNN), and the FFL picked out (local gunstore).

Is this process right:

Go to FFL (gunstore) and ask them to receive gun from CDNN. They say yes, I pay FFL fee, fill out background check form.

Then call up CDNN, order rifle, give CDNN FFL number (what other FFL info?), pay CDNN, they ship rifle to FFL.

FFL calls me when they get rifle in, I pick it up, done.

Is this somewhat right?

Yes.
If you know the FFL real well, he/she might start the process over the phone.
Then you pick up the firearm when it arrives at your FFL.
My guy who I've known for 14 years will do this for me.

It's a bit out of order from how I've done it.

The way I've done it is to arrange for the FFL to receive it and have him send a copy of his license via fax/mail/email to the shipping dealer. Then I verify the shipping dealer has all the info and place the order with them.

When the firearm arrives at the FFL, then I do the 4473 and pay them the transfer fee. I've never done the 4473 or paid the fee up front.

If in doubt, ask your local FFL. This is likely not the first time they've done it.

Ah ok, thanks, so when I ask, will the FFL call up CDNN right away and tell them he's faxing stuff over? Then call CDNN later and check up, and place order?

I've never done that part either. But as Jorg says ask your local FFL guy.

i've always done the 4473 when i picked up the item. wouldn't they need the serial number before they could fill out the form anyway?

mine were done through gunbroker. i won the auction, contacted a local FFL, provided their info to the seller and told them fax was on the way. then sent payment. i did all the "checking up" with both the seller and the local FFL to make sure everyone had what they needed and the item was on the way. FFL called me when the item arrived, i filled out the 4473, paid their fee, and went home with the item.

i hope that made sense...

The FFL that I work with provides me with a copy of their form. I send that to the seller with the payment, and ask the seller to e-mail me when the firearm is shipped with a tracking number (my FFL doesn't always call me to let me know things have arrived). I show up and fill out the paperwork, pay my fee to them and leave with a big stupid grin on my face for the trip home.

The FFL I use to do the transfer gives me a hand signed paper copy of his FFL and I send that copy with my MO/check payment to the seller.

When the gun arrives at my FFL (he doesn't call me, I usually get tracking info from the seller/shipper), I go to pick up the gun, fill out the 4473, get the NICS approval, and pay the FFL his transfer fee.

I also pick up another FFL copy for my next potential online purchase.

My state does not register guns so I often get the paper work started so the waiting period is up when the gun arrives. All the customer has to do is sign that they received the gun and pay my fee.
