Well our gun shop is to far to be concedered close but if you do a weekend adventure to learn more about the mountain area ,Burnsville nc has a great gun shop at prices not many can match. Prices Creek General Store. Its known around there as ballews (blue's). They keep at leaset couple hundred rifles shotguns and pistols in stock, He sells for 10% over his cost for orders items. @ friends just bought a ruger red hawks for 673 each. Most of the in stock is also discounted.

Depending on where you're at in Chatham, http://www.wakegov.com/firingrange/default.htm might not be too far for shooting. It's a nice indoor range run by Wake County. You'll have to pay a bit more b/c you're not a wake resident but it's not unreasonable. They've got about 20 50yd lanes and 10 100yd lanes.

shops
http://silverdollargunandpawn.com in Ramseur has a good selection and is probably the closest to you. There are a few smaller shops in Asheboro whose names I can't remember.
In apex, http://www.younggunsinc.com/ pretty good selection but they have a couple of salesman who never miss the chance to tell you the govt is going to take them all away, get them while you can. It puts me off, but might not bother you.

if you make it into the triangle, my favorites are
www.pdhsc.com(they also have a pistol range)
www.lawmens.com(a block away from pdhsc )
http://fuquaygun.com/(don't let the website fool you, huge selection here)

I've heard good things about some of the shops in the Burlington/Mebane area but I haven't been in them enough to recommend them myself.

PS Most of the walmarts around you sell guns too

Fuquay gun and gold is my go to gun shop. Knowledgeable staff, good selection, and hands down the best prices.
I drive down from raleigh, and its worth the trip.

Being an out of stater, don't know 'zactly where Chatham county is, but based on other recommendations you're getting...

The previously mentioned/linked Lawmen's is a good place to buy SD ammo. Pretty good selection and their prices on most SD ammo is 'bout as cheap as I've seen, 'specially 357 SIG. Last few trips down, they had Remington Golden Sabre Bonded 357 SIG for less than $18/box of 50! Most of his other SD ammo is Speer Gold Dot.
And of course, being a police supply house means iff'n you're interested in police gear etc...
Greensboro NC also has a Streicher's. More police supply etc-I've seen pretty good prices on SD ammo online, but store prices on it were outrageous last time I was in. Some of his accessory prices aren't too bad.

You might also try Mace Sports in Mebane NC? Being an out of stater, I never paid a lot of attention to gun prices, but they seemed to be a little on the high side, but maybe some decent sales? I have bought a lot of accessories there.
Iff'n you're at Mace, and like this kinda thing, I sometimes cruise the Petro Truck Stop across the highway. Not a bad place to eat, and being a super truck stop, it's kinda like browsing an old hardware store's aisles.

Young Guns in Apex NC-not to awfully impressed with accessory prices (I didn't look that closely at gun prices), but he did have good prices on targets-I cleaned him out of silhouettes on a few trips.

Mace is pretty decent, but no real deals to be had. BIG selection, tho.

Fuquay Gun & Gold are awesome. Great selection, great prices, great folks.

It'll be a bit of a drive for you, but Ed's Gun Shop in Vass is always worth a visit. Prices are very fair & I love the old-school, "dusty gun shop" vibe.

I lived in Chatham Co. for a while between Pittsboro and Sanford, I hated that area. Best of luck.
