I consider carrying a gun in condition 3 CCR (concealed carry rock) because the only thing that you can do at a moment's notice is throw the gun at someone.

Considering you are wanting to be an LEO, get used to the idea that you WILL be carrying in condition 1, and get used to the idea that you most likely will have to draw your weapon at some point in your career. Also, understand that you very well might have to shoot someone in order to protect yourself, other officers, or civilians.

yes, lol i know as a defense or duty weapon i have to carry it loaded. the first round rack is just a habit to ensure and prevent accidental discharge.

Kimber is a fine gun,but a little to big and heavy for ankle carry imo. I think going with a off duty gun that is similiar to your duty gun is your best bet. You will already be use to the glock style and glock makes smaller 45s that would fit a ankle holster if that is the way you plan to ccw

I would not attempt to carry any Kimber in an ankle holster. Think Walther PPS 9mm for an ankle holster..maybe an LCR..

The only problem I see with this is that if you constantly train to rack as you draw, then that's what you're going to do when the SHTF. As I've seen elsewhere on this forum, we don't rise to the occasion -- we fall to the level of our training.

That means even if you're on duty with one in the pipe, if you're ambushed and you have to draw, you WILL rack even though you may have told yourself that you won't. You'll lose both precious time as well as that one round -- and may lose even more time as your brain takes another split-second to ask, "Why did I just rack a round out of my weapon when I needed it most?"

I'm not saying all of this to criticize your plan on how you carry, but you need to know what's going to happen if you're caught in a gunfight. You have to train the way you plan to fight -- there's a reason the Navy set up Fighter Weapons School (aka "TOPGUN") and the Air Force set up Red Flag the way they did.

Skip the 23 since you've got a 22 and try the 27 out. Really try it out, mine grew on me like a barnacle.

And it's leagues ahead of the other Glocks in concealability, as long as you don't go sticking a different magazine in it trying to get higher capacity or a longer grip. It doesn't need it.

-how well does it conceal with ankle holsters?
not many guns conceal well on the ankle.
-is it just a short barrel 1911 or is the grip shortened too?
the barrel is shorter too.
-will the standard 8 round mags fit?
no.
-is the kimber worth it or overpriced?
that would depend entirely on you. for some, the price is outlandishly high. for others, it's a good deal.
-any other quality .45acp options? (ccw only)
nearly any quality 1911 would be good for EDC (every day carry); the profile is thin and flat. even full size 1911s conceal well. just not on the ankle. :D
*ccw = concealed carry weapon in case some of you didn't know
most of us here are pretty well acquainted with that term. ;)
