I'm new to the forum and rather new to the gun world. I'm a 30yo female who was shot in 1998. About a month ago, we started having some drunk messing around with our apartment so I asked the husband to help me get over my fear of guns. So he did. We went out to the range that weekend and he let me fire a few of his guns (Firestar 9mm, Beretta 9mm and a Llama 45).

The 9's were ok, but the 45 felt the best in my hands (I've got rather large hands for a woman)...So here I am, a few weeks later not only owning my own 45, but shooting center mass with it and I have just obtained my ccw.

My weapon of choice is a Llama Max-I 45 duo tone (the husbands gun is the exact same type as mine, but his is fully blued). I am a rather small female (5ft6, 115 lbs), so my choice did take the husband off guard. Believe it or not, I'm able to actually conceal my 45 on me without it being noticeable :)

I just thought I'd add in that not all females are bad and not all married women force their husbands to give up their guns or keep them from buying new ones....My next purchase will be a smaller frame 45 I think....or I might pick up a 9mm or .22 for the "plinking" at the range as the husband likes to call it...whereas the husband is getting his M1 Garand for Christmas, he just doesn't know it yet *grin*

Sorry to hear that you were shot but I'm happy to welcome you to the wonderful world of pistols. I started out with a 9mm but after a month upgraded to a .45 myself. My suggestion to you for a next pistol is .357. While at first, it's a diificult caliber to shoot, it's really addictive. Not to start a flame war but personally, I prefer revolvers over semi-automatics.

Originally i'm from Madison which is about 45 miles east of Cleveland, but presently I live in Meigs Co in Middleport...Which is not the safest community I've ever resided in...I'd feel safer in Hough in good ol Cleveland...at least they've got police up there.....We've got 1 officer per shift and a bar that loves to have fights and whatnot all the time *sigh* you'd think drunks would be a bit more peaceful in a small country town lol
 
Welcome aboard. Glad you survived your ordeal and thrilled that you were able to identify that the problem lay with the P.O.S. who shot you and not the firearm. Many victims cannot make that distinction.

Most of us have very understanding or even enthusiastic better halves. My wife is an avid shooter, mostly handguns but is a fairly accomplished rifle shooter as well. My sister is a hunter, shooter and collector just like me, only on a lesser scale, since equines are her first love and tend to consume currency at a rapid rate.


My next purchase will be a smaller frame 45 I think

If you like 1911 platforms, check out the Springfield, Para and Kimber compacts. For a CCW 1911, the Para C-6 LDA gets my vote.
 
Interesting pseudonym. I had to go back to my Greek lexicon to dig it up. Means "memory". Any significance? (I really do need to go back and restudy Greek (if only to stave off Altzheimer's :), in my Abundant Free Time.)
 
If you don't mind telling, how did you end up getting shot? Glad to hear you've taken an interest in firearms, btw.
 
Welcome aboard. I am new also and so far I've found this is a great forum. Go with what gun you like everybody is different. But be careful. Guns are great in responsible peoples hands.
 
Welcome to The High Road, Mnemesyne! :) Very interesting username, I too would like to know more about it. It's great that you are a female who has taken up shooting, and done so with style! I guess your being able to conceal a full sized 1911 with your frame shoots down a lots of guys arguments about them not being able to conceal one. ;)
There are many ladies on here that enjoy many different types of firearms, and many guys on here like myself who have an understanding spouse/SO. I believe you'll be right at home here. Keep a sense of humor about you, and enjoy The High Road! :)

Good to hear you survived the 98 incident. As for .45's, give the Bersa Mini-Firestorm .45 a look. It's a great little gun for $300 and conceals great. I enjoy mine.

I reckon you know, however, that new members are expected to buy the ammo for the great fest-shoot we'll have when we finally all get together. The only thing which will save you from this expense is the recruiting of an even younger, more innocent, more tender, more (I won't say gullible) member of this forum.

Though notional, and fanciful, this idea is almost, but not quite real, in the heads of lots of us. So far, I've managed to avoid buying ammo for everyone because lots of folks joined up after I did.

Don't be the last one to join up; you could not afford it.

Was my ex husband who shot me...he was supposedly teaching me the "safe" method of using a gun and ironically was showing how the safety worked when it discharged...The worst part was, the moron then pointed the blasted thing at me after it had discharged...Nothing like being the wounded party and having to tell the other person to put the gun down and call 911 because they can't think straight...The reason it has taken me so long to get over the shock and trauma of it was that the gun was about 5-6 inches from my face when it discharged...

The bullet lodged in my leg after entering through the knee...Somehow, the bullet didn't do much more then tear my meniscus a bit and end up near the femoral artery...The paramedics couldn't believe I had been shot as I was cracking alot of jokes :) They asked me if I was allergic to anything and I said nope...cept bullets hehe (leave it to me to have a sense of humor in the face of adversity...must explain why I'm an EMT)

I'm just thankful to have almost full mobility back in my leg...the knee still gives me fits every now and then and sometimes, I feel the burning at the entry spot...the other thing I'm thankful for is that it was only a .22, although further research I did later on shows me just how lucky I was...

It's taken alot of hard work for me to even pick up a gun...but then having some drunk you don't know trying to break into your home kinda makes you get over a fear really quickly...and in my town...well, police just aren't an option (car was broken into and it took them over 45 min to respond and they are about 1500 ft from our house and they were at the station *sigh*....)

This past year, when I was in an accident, the funniest thing that happened was the ER doc coming in after reading my xray and he asks "Did you know you have a bullet in your leg?" I simply looked at him, laughed and said "I guess they didn't teach you how to read a medical history in med school huh?"

As for my nickname, Mnemosyne is the Greek Goddess of Memory, mother to the muses...Since I tend to write alot of poetry and I read alot, I felt it made a nice nickname for myself :) That and it always reminds me to use that brain of mine :)
 
At least you kept a sense of humor about it. When I crushed a few fingers in a machine at work, I was joking about it, too. ;) Glad you came out OK, considering. I chose my usermane because it describes me well also :p , and it reflects my interest in constantly learning new things, like, physics, for instance. ;)
