A severe case of the chronic disease "I WANT" has resulted in my purchase of this 29-2, SN N425XXX. There is a date of Nov 1980 stamped inside one of the grips. The grips look so good I suspect they are refinished but the GS knew the prior owner and said he was a stickler for buying and selling only mint condition guns. And it is.

I'm not a hard core collector of old Smiths. Not yet anyway. I DO have 4 though.

Thanks for looking.

Good catch on the grip screw. No it's not missing. I took the grips off to clean it well and to see if the grips were stamped with the SN or date. I didn't put the screw back in before taking the photos.

Sweet looking Model 29 you have there. Mine is pictured on the top in this picture, it's a 29-5 and look Ma, no flutes. :) Not a great picture and while the wood grips do look much nicer the rubber make the gun much more comfortable to shoot.

In early 1970's I bought my first 3 handguns, a 4" 28-2, a 8.375 29-2 in nickel and a 4" Service 6. I still have the Ruger but sold the other 2 shortly after I bought them. Don't remember why.

So perhaps in an effort to recapture my misspent youth, I acquired the 28 and 29 models. Nostalgia aint what it used to be, but I enjoy having the guns.

Nice M29. You're going to enjoy it and you'll find you'll always need just one more :)

I have a few, they are fun to shoot and admire.

Enjoy...

I did some horse trading for an M29 this past summer and I just love shooting .44 Special reloads in the piece. Accurate, with mild recoil!

My first 44 was a 4" 29-2.
I've settled on a 5" 629-6 classic as my goto do-all revolver.
That first 29 though holds a special place.

Nice Model 29. However I suspect those are not the original grips it came with.

Your Serial Number, N425XXX, indicates the gun was made sometime in 1977 or 1978. However grips with the 'speedloader cut' like yours are from a little bit later, November 1980 is a reasonable guess for when that type of grips came out.

Grips like the ones on Armybrat's photo are what probably were on your 29-2 when it left the factory. The football shaped cutout at the top of the left grip is an extractor relief cut, put there to make reloading easier without the extractor hitting the top of the grip. The cut at the top of your left grip is there to clear a speed loader.

Look to see if there is a Serial Number stamped on your grips. If they are the grips the gun was wearing when it left the factory, the number will match the SN at the bottom of the butt.

Driftwood, thanks for the explanation. There is no SN inside the grips but "Nov 1980" is printed on the inside of one half. I am a little disappointed that they are not original, but I still am very pleased with the gun.

I didn't buy it for "investment" but because I like the P&R Smiths, and perhaps trying to relive my youth.

Again, thanks for the info. I never would have known that on my own!

I've personally always felt that the M29 was the best looking DA 44 mag. ever made. The blue finish has always been a high point with high end S&W IMO anyway. But I think the combination of the lines, the finish, and a custom pair of grips, and it's pretty hard to get any better than that.

Grips....that gives me an idea. As the grips aren't original, maybe I'll put a pair of Ahrends grips on it. I am 99% sure I have a pair, at least 1, in my grips tote box. Everybody has one of those I suppose (j/k). It's next to the holster tote, right?

Yes I hove the bluing and the lines. A beautiful gun.

Love the old 29s. Had a nickel that was a little rough. Traded it for a never fired blue version. That in turn got traded ( along with a wad of cash ) for a Freedom Arms 353. I'd love to get another 29. But they are getting stupid expensive. May never be able to get another.

Congrats on yours. Very nice.

I own one that is in the same configuration as yours. Mine is a "pre-29" model however. One SWEET gun! Mine is perfect except a tiny bit of holster wear. BTW I also have the shoulder holster for it-made by S&W.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure they are Altamont grips. Yes very comfortable. I can readily see how people can get hooked on these older guns. For me it's a nostalgia trip as these were the ones I had in the 70's. I won't be selling THIS group however.

This was my Model 29 battery at one time:

Now I have only the 5" full lug model at lower right. Got over the double action phase of my revolver education.

As a matter of interest, this was the gun at top left with the 8 3/8" barrel:

The gun shot like a .30-30 out to about 100 yards, but was somewhat unwieldy. Bob Mason, of Ed Mason & Sons cut the barrel back and relocated the front sight for me.
