It's almost perfect. The only gripe I have with it is:
SAM_1072.jpg

It's post-ban so it'll require some work to make it proper.

Also there's some minor cosmetic damage under the carry-handle from the cheapo scope and mount.

It also came with some pants-on-head retarded 3-point-sling that I promptly removed.

All for $700 :D

I had one ca. 1994 w/a factory muzzle brake. NICE AR. At the time you could only get Colt, Bushy, Olympic and DPMS. Quality-wise, I rated mine waaay above all contenders.

I have two M15A4's. Both came with a "pinned" brake installed. One was post ban, pre repeal, the other post repeal, but all they did was throw a flash hider in the box and left me to my own devices to get the "brake" off, and the flash hider on.

Good news if you have a pinned brake is, its only about an hour of filing, and the new muzzle device goes right on.

Since yours isnt threaded, maybe give Armalite a call/email and see if they can help you out.

Both of mine have been good shooting rifles, and reliable. My only complaint is, both are mag sensitive as far as fit go, and you need to try and verify that the mags you want to use will fit. Not all do.

Just curious, what all do you plan to do to make it proper and how much will this cost?
Flash hider. I guess getting the barrel threaded is what I really need unless I wanted a pinned-on one (which may work since I have no intention of ever replacing it).
And replace the FSB with one that has a bayonet lug.

No idea on cost. I asked earlier and all I got were a bunch of questions about the legality (it's legal here, btw) and other random suggesstions like re-barreling or getting an entirely new upper.

Did you fire it yet? Like some of the other posters, I've got a M15A4 with the pinned on brake that I bought in the late 90s. That rifle shoots dime sized groups at 100yds with 53 grain Sierras. Funny, I don't often see Armalite mentioned in the contentious good/bad AR threads.

Can't fire it yet.

Bought it today and despite coming with a scope, sling, and carrying case, it DIDN'T come with a magazine and the store only had P-Mags (the appearance of which I find objectionable).

all my ar15s and AR10s are ARmalite, I do have a Rock River Arms 15 without a flash hider/brake on it, cant remember when I bought it, nice rifle, but I stay with ARmalites.

That was a good buy Camel. I have and Armalite M4gery and a friend has a mid length Armalite. They are both excellent range toys. Neither has the staked castle nut or the desirable front sight whatever but who cares. We have fun with them. I guess I've seen about a thousand rounds through both and my friends mid length has a considerable accuracy advantage. Yours should show impressive results. Both show that they are chambered for 5.56.

I did have a Bushmaster A2 HBAR from the ban period (like yours) and it was more accurate than either of the Amalites I have experience with.

You may be able to find a better deal through a local gunsmith, but if you send your complete upper to ADCO(highly recommended for AR barrel work) it is going to cost $115.00 plus shipping if you send them the complete upper.($65.00 for the barrel threading, and $50.00 to remove/reinstall your barrel). Deduct the $50.00 if you can just send them the barrel.

Changing the FSB for one with the bayonet lug is tricky, and can be expensive. When the FSB is installed at the factory, it is put on, THEN the pin holes are drilled through the FSB and the barrel. You generally can't simply swap them out, because the new one is un-drilled, and the likelihood of getting the holes to line up is small. ADCO offers the service for $130.00, but I don't know what their process entails.

Alternatively, you can get an FSB that secures via set screws. You just have to ensure your gas port in the barrel lines up with the gas port in the FSB and hope things don't move based on the less than ideal method of securing the FSB.
Ultimately you may be better off leaving the rifle in a "ban compliant" configuration. Modifications could bring you up to the price level that you could have purchased a rifle with the features you want from the get go.

If I skip the barrel threading (for now, at least) and just gor for the FSB with bayonet lug, can I mount a bayonet and the barrel ring just be a bit looser fitting?

I know on mid-length ARs the ring typically goes over the rear-center of the flash suppressor, but it seems like on full-length ones it goes over the base of the flash suppressor (the end of the barrel where the threads would normally be).

You could mount a bayo without a flash supressor. However, it would just be supported by the lugs/locking mechanism of the bayo only, with no support of the ring.
